Description

(No Model.)
J. WILKE.
TRUSS.
Patented Aug. 28, 1888.
UNITED STATI-is PATENT OFFICE.
JOACHIM wILKE, F GARRETT, INDIANA.
TRUss.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 388,608. dated August 28, 1888.
Application led Februaryal', 1888. Serial No. 265.499. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OACHIM WILKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Garrett,in
ing drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specitlcation.
My invention relates to trusses, and has for its object to provide an arrangement of belts and pads which give entire freedom of movement to the wearer without any danger of displacing the pads.
Ihe invention consists of certain arrangements and constructions of parts, hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved truss. Fig. 2 is a full-sized section of one ofthe pads. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of one of the springs.
The pads are mounted upon a plate, A,
\ Vpreferably of stout leather, and provided at each end with a buckle or a hook for the attachment of a belt, B, of elastic material. Near each end of the plate are three slots, a. These two pads are each provided with a base-plate, C, of metal, which has a lug, c, near its top and another near its bottom. When the plate is made of sheet metal, the lugs may be formed by taking a fold in the sheet, as illustrated in Fig. 2. These lugs are passed through the slots a in the plate A, and a spring pin or staple, C', is then inserted into suitable holes in the lugs c, thereby securely attaching the pads to the plate, but enabling them to be readily removed when desired.
Clamped between the base-plate C and another metallic plate, Cl, is a leather or cloth cover, D, which is suitably padded with hair to form a cushion, d, and is held distended by means of springs E. These springs are M- shaped, as shown in Fig. 3, having at each anglea coil, e. Several of these springs are arranged side by side in each pad, their iixed ends being secured alternately to the upper and lower parts of the plate C2, so that their free ends bear evenly against the under side` of the cushion d. This makes an easy yielding pad which responds quickly to any change in pressure due to themovements of the individual.
Attached to the bottom of the base-plate G is a short strap, F, which is passed through one ofthe slots a in the plate A, and unites with a buckle, f, secured to the upper part of the base-plate C, thus forming a loop. A second belt, G, is slipped loosely through these loops, being provided with a suitable buckle or other means for adjusting it. This belt is of such a width` as to be received between the lugs c of the pads by which it is supported.
other end into two loops, h', in which are loosely held the two belts B and G. When l the truss is put on, these straps pass between the thighs of the wearer, and, being loosely attached to the belts, theywill automatically adj ust themselves to the various movements of the person. The belts, moreover, are retained in their relative positions and are prevented from slipping apart.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
l. The combination, with the slotted plate A, of the pads having the perforated lugs c passed through the slots in the plate A, the spring-pins C', and a suitable belt, substantial] y as set forth.
2. The combination, with the slotted plate A, of the belt B, the pads having the perforated lugs c, the springpins C', the straps F, and the belt G, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the slotted plate A, of the belt B, attached to said plate, the pads having the perforated lugs c passed through the slots in plate A, the spring-pins C', the straps F, the belt G, the buckles h, attached to the pads, and the thigh-straps H, having the loops h, through which pass loosely the belts G and B, substantially as described.
4. A pad for a truss, composed of the base- IOO plate C, the plate G2, the cover D,elamped be- In testimony whereof Iafx my signature in tween the two plates, the cushion d, and the presence of two Witnesses. IVI-shaped springs E, having a coil at each angle and arranged side by side with their JOAGHIM-VILKE. 5 Xed ends secured alternately in opposite sides of the plate G2, and their free ends bear- Vtnesses:
ing against the underside ofthe cushion, sub- J. F. JOHNSTON,
stantially as and for the purpose set forth; l J o. LoMoD.
