UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANTON AHLQUIST, OF ISHPEMING, MICHIGAN.
FINGER-SHIELD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 388,519, dated August 28, 1888.
Serial 310.269.35 1. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANTON AIILQUXST, of Ishpeniing, in the county of Marquette and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved ltinger-Shield, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming apart thereof, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View showing the application ofmy improved finger shield. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is an end elevation, and Fig. 4 is a transverse section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, easily applied, and efficient finger-shield for the protection of the fingers of musicians while playing on stringed instruments, such as the guitar and harp.
My invention consists in a curved strip of spring metal, adapted to receive the end of the finger or thumb, provided with a covering of leather or analogous material, the said cov ering being furnished with a coating of a mixture of Venice turpentine and pitch.
In carrying out my invention I cut a strip, A, of any suitable sheet illCttll-Sll0ll as gold, silver, brass, or German silver and round the ends thereof, and curve the strip into an approximately circular form, with the ends separated, so as to permit the curved strip to spread to adapt itself to fingers of different sizes. I surround the central portion of the i said strip of metal with a leather covering, ii, I
which is secured to the metal either by means of cement or by sewing. To the outer surface of the covering B, I apply a mixture of Venice turpentine and pine-pitch, mixed together in about the proportions of three parts of turpentine and one of pitch. This mixture insures a clear tone and facilitates playin My improved finger-shield takes the wear that usually comes upon the ends of the fingers and thumb, and thus renders playing more comfortable, at the same time insuring a more positive action of the finger upon the string.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A finger-shield formed of a curved strip of metal adapted to receive the end of the linger, and a leather contactsurface (arried by the said metallic strip, substantially as specified.
2. In a finger-shield for players of stringed instruments, the combination of the curved strip A, the leather covering 13, and a coating of Venice turpentine and pitch applied to the leather covering, substantially as specified.
3. As an improved article of manufacture, a finger-shield formed of a curved metallic strip and a leather covering inelosing its cen trul portion, substantially as specified.
