UNITED STATlEZSi PETER M. RUDESYLE, OF PASSI AIG, NEN JERSEY.
PICK FOR STRINGED INSTRUMENTS.
Application .filed September 22, 1919. Serial No. 325,489.
1 '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER M. Runnsrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Passaic, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picks for Stringed Instruments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to picks for mandolins, or analogous stringed instruments, and an object of the invention is to provide means on the portion of the pick which is gripped by the thumb and finger of the user which means will prevent the slipping of the pick between the users fingers.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide means for preventing the slipping of the pick between the users thumbs and fingers which will ornament the pick and which comprises a plurality of aiternate depressed and raised surfaces upon each side of the pick.
'Qther objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification and in which drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pick constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section through the pick, and
Figure 3 is a detail section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the pick 5 is constructed of any suitable material, usually employed in the making of picks for mandolins or analogous stringed instruments, the said pick being provided with a relatively pointed end 6 adapted to engage the strings of the instrument, and the relatively large end or portion 7 which is gripped between the fingers of the users. Picks, with perfectly smooth surfaces on each side quite frequently slip between the thumb and finger of the user, hampering his efiicient playing of the instrument, and to avoid this slipping of the pick, it is provided with a plurality of alternate depressed and raised elongated surfaces 8 and 9 upon each side or face thereof. These depressed and raised surfaces are shown in the drawings, as radiating from the common center. They are preferably arranged upon each side in such manner that a depression lies directly adjacent a raised portion and having all edges thereof so rounded as to present an undulating appearance. The depressions and raced portions are elongated and since they are in such close proximity and radiate from a common center. it follows. that upon each side, the projections and depressions are broader at their outer ends and smaller at their inner ends. The depressions and raised portions, however, terminate short their common center to form a smooth surface on e her side of the pick for the thumb or f "er of the user to rest upon.
is to be understood that they However, it may be made in any desired manner or configuration, other than that illustrated in the draw. of this invention.
These alternate depressed and raised surfaces upon the opposte faces or sides of the pick 5 are preferably formed by pressing the material of which the pick is made. as illustrated in Figures 2 and 3 of the drawings, so as to provide the roughened surfaces of the portion of the pick which gripped by the thumb and finger of the user, without detracting from the strength of the pick or making it more frangible.
Changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit of this invention. but; 4
I claim:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a pick for stringed instruments provided with alternate raised and depressed rounded surfaces upon a side thereof in close proximity presenting an undulating surface. u
2. As a new article of manufacture, a pick for stringed instruments provided with alternate depressed and raised elongated surfaces on each side thereof, said surfaces radiating from a common center.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a
as, without departing from the spirit pick for stringed instruments provided with a plurality of alternate depressed and raised elongated surfaces on one side thereof, said surfaces radiating from common center.
4:. As a new article of manufacture, a pick for stringed instruments provided with elongated raised and depressed rounded surfaces on each side thereof, radiating from a'common center, and in close proximity presenting an undulating surface,
5. As a new article of manufacture, pick for stringed instruments provided with elongated raised and depressed portions upon each side thereof radiating from a common center, said depressions and raised portions being broader at their outer ends undulating surface, and iiOIfll'lilitttillg shortoi said common center to present a smooth surface upon either side of the pick, Within 10 that encompassed by the said raised and depressed surfaces.
PETER M RUDESYLE. a 8.
