RICHARD J. CARPENTER AND THOMAS G. TOWNER, OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
PICK FOR MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS.
7 Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 22, 1918.
Application filed July 15, 1915. Serial No. 40,015.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, RICHARD J. CARPEN- TER and THOMAS G. Towxnn, citizens of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picks for Musical Instruments, of which the following is a. specification.
This invention relates to improvements in picks for musical instruments and has for its principal object the construction of a device of this character having a gripping surface whereby the same is easily gripped between the thumb and fore finger without danger of slipping and with a minimum of effort.
Another object is to provide the abovementioned desirable features without sacrificing flexibility or strength of a pick of the usual construction.
lVith these and other objects in view our invention consists in the combination and construction of parts as herein described and more specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
Reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specifica- 'tion:
Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of a pick constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of the same.
Referring to corresponding parts by the same numerals of reference, 1 denotes the pick of the usual oval shape, to the wider end of which is attached a thin covering of sheet cork denoted by 2. This covering extends approximately over one-half the length of the pick 1 and may be applied on one or both sides thereof. In this manner I provide a gripping surface which is smooth and pleasant to the touch, which offers sufficient friction to eliminate the danger of the pick lipping in the fingers thereby not necessitating the muscular effort which is required to grip the usual style pick. On account of the lessened muscular eflort our improved pickis much less tiresome to hold.
By referring to the drawings, it will be observed that the sheet 2 is thin, perfectly flat, and unbroken, so that when glued or otherwise attached to the pick 1, the sheet 2, becomes practically an integral part of the pick, it being firmly attached at all portions so that there is no possibility of the sheet vibrating relative to the pick.
While we have shown the preferred embodiment of our invention it will be understood that minor changes may be made in proportion of parts without departing from the spirit thereof.
What we claim as new and wish to cover by Letters Patent is:
A. pick for musical instruments compris ing a flatresilient body, and a layer of flat sheet cork lying against and attached to one face only of said body and conforming to the contour of the body, said cork layer being of less area than the area of the face of the body to which attached. 7
In testimony whereof, we afiix our signatures. v
RICHARD J. CARPENTER. THOMAS G. TOWNER.
