- J. W. PAULEN.
GATE.
NITED STATES PATENT Ormea.
JACOB W. FAULEN, OF FANCY PRAIRIE, ILLINOIS.
GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 388,502, dated August 28, 1888.
.Application iilcd April 25, 1888.
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB W.` FAULEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fancy Prairie, in the county of Menard and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and tigures of reference marked thereon, whichform a part of this specilication.
Thisinvention relates to gates of that class which are adapted to slide and swing, and which can be tipped up at one end to allow for sagging and permit small stock to pass beneath them. r
The object of the invention is the provision of simple and efficient means for mounting the gate, whereby it can be hinged at either end, and adjusted at one or both ends, which hereinafter will be more fully described and claimed, and shown in the annexed drawings.
Figure lis aperspective view of a gate embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a side view showing the gate partially moved back and having its outer end adjusted; and Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the T-casting.
The gate A is of the usual form, having end battens and longitudinal rails, and is supported between the two posts B and B', located on each side of the roadway, respectively.
The mountings consist of the bolts C and C', the T-casting D, the rods E and F, and the roller g, journaled in the frame G, which is connected by a swivel-joint with the bolt C. The arms d of the casting D have a series of perforations, any one of which is adapted to receive the bent end e of the rod E, the other end, e', of the rod E being bent and tted in an opening in the bolt C. The lower end, d', of the casting D is bent up to embrace the lower edge of a `rail of the gate between it and the vertical portion d2 of the said casting, and the roller H, placed between the portions d and cl2, is mounted on the end f of the rod F, which end passes through the parts d and d2. The catch 71., pivoted to the end of the vertical Serial No. 271,783. (No model.)
portion d2, overhangs the roller H and prevents the vertical displacement of the gate. The lower end of the rod F is bifurcated to form the two extensions ff, which are adapted to fit in an opening in the bolt O. The upper end, f, of the rod F is permanently connected with the casting D, and is free to turn therein to permit the adjustment of the casting D and the swinging of the rod F from one side to the other, according as the gateis to be hinged on the right-hand orleft-hand end.
In mounting the gate the rails thereoftare iitted on the rollers H and g, the roller g being grooved to receive the lower edge of the rails. By moving the end e of the rod Eon the arms d of the casting D andinserting it in any of the openings therein the outer end of the gate can be raised or lowered, as desired. The gate can be readily raised or lowered bodily by detaching it from the rollers H and g and readj usting it.
Gates are not always end; hence the necessity of having the casting provided with two arms and the lower end of the rod F bifurcated, so that the mountings can be adapted for mounting the gate at either end.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, wit-h the gate and supports for the inner end of the gate, of the casting D, having the lateral arms d, and having its lower end bent to embrace the lower edge of a rail of the gate, the pivoted catch h to bear on the upper edge of the said rail and hold it down, and the supportingrods E and F, the rod E being adj ustably connected with the said arms, substantially as described, for the purpose specified. i
' 2. The combination, with the gate and supports for the inner end of the gate, of the casting D,`having the lateral arms d, land having the pivoted catch 7L at its upper end, the roller H at the lower end of the casting, the rod F, forminga journal for the said roller H, and having its lower end bifurcated, and the rod E, adjustably connected with the said arms D and with the gatesupports, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the gate-post and hinged on the same the gate, of the xed support for theinner end of the gate, the casting having a lateral arm that is provided with a series of openings, the rod F, having the casting pivoted on its upper end, and the rod E, adjustably interposed between the casting and the gate-post, substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. The combination, with the gate-post, the gate, and the belts C and C', ofthe snpportg, the casting D, having a roller and lateral arms eX- tending in opposite directions, which areprovided with a series of openings, and havinga pivoted Catch, the rod E,adjustably interposed between the casting and the upper bolt, and the rod F, pivotally connected with the casting and having its lower end bifnrcated, substantially as described.
5. The combination, with the gate-post, the gate, and the bolts C and C', of the frame G,
having the roller g swiveled upon the bolt C, the casting D, having the oppositely-disposed arms d, which have a series of openings, and having its lower end bent up to embrace a rail of the gate, the roller H, the rod F, having its uppei` end connected with the casting and forming a support for the roller H, and having its lower end bifurcated and adapted to fit in an opening in the bolt C', the rod E, adjustably interposed between the casting and the bolt C, and the pivoted catch h, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereofI afx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JACOB WV. FAULEN.
