UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JASPER C. ALEXANDER, OF FISHERS STATION, lNDIANA.
GATE...
srncrrrcn'rron forming part of Letters Patent No. 416,885, dated December 10, 1889.
Application filed May 13, 18i39- Serial No. 310,560. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JASPER C. ALEXANDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fishers Station, in the county of Hamilton and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Swinging Gates, of which the following isa specification;
My invention relates to an improvement in swlnging gates.
The object of my improvement is to provide means for nicely adjusting the width of the gate to the distance between the gate-posts;
and for adjusting the position of the gatelatch so as to compensate for the racking of the gate-posts and the sagging or shrinking and swelling of the gate, all as hereinafter fully described. 1 The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation showing the gate-posts plumb. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of the opposite side,'showing the gateposts out of plumb and the gate adjusted to. the new position of the posts. Fig. 3 represents, on a larger scale, a section of the gate at line a: :0, Fig. 1. a y
. A and B are the gate-posts. The frame of the gate consists of the top andbottom rails C and D and side rail E (which are rigidly framed together "and provided with a fixed brace F) and a side rail H, which is adjustably secured to the ends of the top and bottom rails by brackets it and j. Said brackets are rigidly attached at one end to the side rail H and extend alongthe top and bottom rails, and are secured thereto by bolts 70 and Z, which pass through the rails and through slotted holes min the brackets. Brackets it are secured to the outer-and inner faces of the side rail H andextend along the'correspondiug faces of the top rail 0, so as to resist the side-thrust against the side rail, while bracket j is secured to the side rail in the angle formed by it with the top of the bottom rail D, and extends along the bottom rail,
- soas to prevent the side rail from dropping down. The gate-latch N is not permanently secured 'to theside rail,as is commonly the case, but is pivoted to'a metallic casing O, which embraces the side rail Hon three sides, and is adjustably secured thereto bya setscrew 10, as shown in Fig. 3,-the set-screw passing through the casing and impinging against the inner side of the rail. The gate is hinged on that side having the fixed side rail E to the post B in any suitable manner.
In operation the relation between the posts having from any cause been changed so as to widen or narrow the space between them, bolts 70 and l are loosened and rail H' is adjusted so as to be parallel with and swing clear of post A. Bolts 70 and Z are then tightened, and latch N is adjusted to engage the and Z, all combined and' arranged to co-operate as specified, whereby the loose rail is adjustably secured to the frame, as and for the purpose specified.
