UNITED STATES PATENT JOHN F. MCAFEE, OF PLEASANT HILL, MISSOURI.
PAPER=HANGING CLAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 387,792, dated August le, 1888.
Application filed August 27, 18S?. Serial No. 219.034. (No mode-l.)
To (LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. MUAFEE, of Pleasant Hill, in the county of Cass and State of llflissonrnhave invented anew and Improved Paper-Hanging Clamp, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved clamp for attaching wallpaper to the wall; and my improvement is preferably nsed in connection with a paperhanging machine for which I tile an application of even date herewith, and numbered 248,035.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter folly described, and pointed ont in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a rear elevation of my improved clamp. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, showing the clampingbar in a closed position; and Fig. 3 is a similar view of the saine, show ing the clampingbar open.
My improved clamp A is provided with a handle, B, of suitable length, and carrying on the ripper end a slightly-inclined plate, C, to the inner side of which is fastened a brush, D, of any approved construction. On the back of the plate C, near its upper end, is formed a semicircnlar groove, E, into which ts a bar, F, secured to arms G of a bell-crank lever,G, fnlcrumed at H on the hack of the plate C. The other arms, G2, of the bell-crank lever are pivotally connected with the upper end of a rod, J, extending downward along the handle B, and guided in suitable bearings, K,secnred in said handle B.
The rod J is provided near its middle with an offset or shoulder, J', adapted to engage the opper bearing, K, when said rod J is pulled downward, as shown in Fig. 3, so that the shoulder J rests against the bearing K, and thereby holds the clamping-bar F in an open position. The lower end of the rod J is provided with a convenient handle, L, for operating said rod J.
The operation is as follows: One end of the wallpaper-,which is covered with paste on its back, is placed on the upper end of the back of the plate C when the clamp-bar F is in an open position, as shown in Fig. 3. The end of the paper extends across the groove E, so that when the operator releases the shoulder J from under the guide K the bell-cranlr lever G is caused to swing by the action of the spring I, so that the clamping-bar F clamps the paper in the groove E. The operator now raises the clamp A by taking hold of the handle B, and presses the upper clamped end against the wall near the ceiling, so that the paste causes the paper to adhere to the wall. The operator then pulls on the handle L of the rod J, so that the clamping-bar F disengages the end of the wall paper, and then the operator presses the brush D on the paper and strikes downward, so that said brush presses the entire length of the paper against the Wall. The operator may move the brush up and down several times on the paper, so as to canse it to adhere firmly to the wall.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a paper-hanging clamp, the combina tion,with a handle, a grooved plate on the end thereof, and a brush on the plate, of a Springpressed bell-crank lever pivoted on the said plate, a bar carried by the crank-lever and engaging the groove of the board, and a rod for operating said crank-lever, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In a paper-hanging clamp, the combina` tion, with a handle, an inclined plate secured to the end of the handle and provided with a semicircular groove in its upper surface, and a brush on the lower snrface'of the plate, of a bell-crank lever pivoted on the plate, a bar carried by said bellcrank lever, a spring for holding the bar in the groove of the plate, and a rod passing through bearings on the handle and provided with an offset for engaging the upper bearing to lock the clamp open, substantially as herein shown and described.
JOHN F. MCAFEE.
