which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full,clear, and eXac-t description.

My invention relates to improvements in Aknockdown portable paper-:tiles of the class referred to in my applicatiomSerial No. 249,198, ofeven datehe1ewith;and mypresentinvention consistsinprovidingabasehavinglongitudinal rabbets in the outer edges thereof, a rod located in the rabbet, forming a slide upon which adj ustable partitions provided with means for connecting the same to the rod slide longitudinally ou the base, all as hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claim.

Fig. 2 shows a transverse section through the base, illustrating the rabbets in the outer edges ofthe base and the wire rod upon which the partitions are adjusted longitudinally. Fig. 3 is a detached view of an adjustable sliding partition, show- Fig. 4 isa transverse section illustrating the base provided with the wire rod on the outer sides thereof, but with the rabbets in theouter edges omitted. Fig. 5 illustrates an edge View of an adjustable partition formed of wire. Figs. 6, 7, and 8 are respectively details of the wire partition and the rod upon which the partitions adjust longitudinally, the rod being shown in Fig. 7 detached from the base of the paper le or rack.

A denotes the base of my improved paper file or rack, the same consisting of a suitable support, preferably made of wood and provided with longitudinal rabbets a a in the outer edges thereof, as best shown in the isometric view, Fig. l, and the transverse section, Fig. 2.

It will be observed that the rabbet a is of sufficient depth and width to allow the wire rod b, provided with bends e, as best shown in (No model.)

rlhe sliding partitions C are preferably constructed of sheet metal and with angular flanges projecting from the edges thereof, as shown in Fig. 3. The said flanges have depending feet c, provided with eyes or apertures d. The projecting fianges are made of suitable width to fit within the angular rabbet a of the base A, and to thereby support the partitions C in an upright or vertical position on the base A, as illustrated in Fig. l.

The rod I) serves as a guide or traveler upon which the slides or partitions C may be adjusted; hence, when it is stated that the eyes or apertures d in the depending feet c of the slides C slip over the rod b, which is detached from the base A for the purpose of allowing the same to be inserted through the eyes d, it will be readily understood how the slides C are adjusted longitudinally.

The object of my invention is fully set outin my application, Serial No. 249,198,0f even date herewith,and my present invention differs from that described in said application in the means for adj nstahly connecting the slides or partitions O to the base A, said means consisting in the devieesjust described. I do not, however, restrict myself to providing the base A with rabbets a, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, since the only office of the rabbets is to provide a depressed seat for the flanges and depending feet d ofthe slides C, so as to leave the bottom of the bill file or rack flush; hence the rabbets may be dispensed with and the rod b, which is essential in that it provides a guide or traveler upon which the slides adjust, may be secured directly to the outer sides of the base A, as shown in Fig. 4, and the anges and depending feet d of the slides C merely project over the outer edges of the base. The only difference between the two constructions is that by providing the rabbets the upper surface of the iianges and the base are iiush, While in the modified form, where the rabbets are dispensed with, the flanges project over the outer edges of the base.

At Figs. 5, 6, and 8 I have illustrated further modifications in the detail construction of the slides, in which I substitute wire partitions C for the sheet-metal partitions, illustrated in lOO 5 as in case of the sheet-metal feet of the slides C.

In the modification illustrated in Fig. 8 I construct the feet c hook-shaped, and the legs fof the slides C of spring metal, and spring the hooks c over the rod b, instead of slipping Io the rod b through the eyes d, as previously described.

'Ihe essential characteristics of my invention consist in employing the rod b, and eyes d. depending from the slides C, whereby the slides I5 are adjustably connected to the rod longitudinally, and the rod b being secured on the onte edges or sides of the base A.

Theimproved bill-file herein illustrated and described is very simple and economical to 2o manufacture, and presents a very desirable and durable device for the desired purpose.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s*- The combination of the base A, having rabbets a extending lengthwise in the outer edges thereof, rods b, detachably secured to the base within the rabbets, and slides C, having depending feet c and eyes d, through which the rods b pass, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
