ATTACHMENT FOR SQUARES. No. 386,651. Patented July 24, 1 888.
NlTE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES F. NICHOLS, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
ATTACHMENT FOR SQUARES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 386,651, dated July 24-, 1888.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES F. NIoHoLs, of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in an Attachment for Squares for Marking the Channels of Rustic; and I hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the same.
My invention relates to an attachment for squares. by which that class of lumber used for outside finish, and known as rustic, may be correctly marked over its surface irregularities, so that it can be correctly sawed or cutto make close end joints.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure 1 is a view of my device showing its attachment to an ordinary try-square. Fig. 2 is an edge view showing its application.
That class of lumber used for the outside finish of buildings, and known as rustic, has its outer surface made irregular by channels formed in the edges, so that it may overlap and make a tight horizontal joint. It is not easy to mark this irregular surface so that it can be sawed accurately, and my invention is designed to overcome this difficulty. It consists of a light metal frame, A, formed in two parts, which may be clamped upon the blade of an ordinary right-angled marking-square, B, by means of clamping screws or bolts C. The two parts of the frame have flat faces formed at one side. and when the device is se cured upon the square these faces stand flush with its edge and at right angles therefrom, as shown in the drawings. The faces D are each of a width equal to the depth of the channels which are formed in the manufacture of rustic,
and which are usually of uniform depth and bevel, and these faces have one end beveled, as shown at E, to correspond with the bevel of the channel in the lumber. By means of clamping screws or bolts this device is secured upon the blade of the square at a distance from the right angular limb which is equal to the distance from the straight edge of the lumber to the channeled edge.
Vhen the square is used to mark off the lumher, it is placed upon the edge with the blade extending across in the usual manner, and the lowermost of the beveled plates D, following the line of the channel, rests upon the beveled portion and the bottom of the channel, so that it forms a continuation of theline of the blade of the square, and when the pencil or marking-point is drawn along it will form a line not only on the surface of the lumber, but also down the incline and along the bottom of the channel, which will be in an exact vertical plane, and this enables the workmen to saw the lumber perfectly straight and make good transverse joints.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The plates D, having their ends beveled, and
bolts by which they are secured to the blade of the square, so that the surface is flush with its edge and in aplane transverse thereto, substantially as herein described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
CHARLES F. NICHOLS. WVitnesses:
S. H. NoURsE, H. 0. LEE.
