Abstract

Presented is a doll construction which in one of its aspects is arranged to project a typical doll face and which is convertible to remove the conventional and typical doll face to expose an underlying reflective surface to which the child playing with the doll may address remarks.

[56] References Cited UNITED STATES PATENTS 1 Claim, 3 Drawing Figures CONVERTIBLE DOLL HAVING MIRROR SURFACE CONCEALABLE BY A FACE PORTION BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION It is well known among mothers and other people that have the responsibility for the care of small children that small children either frequently talk to themselves during their play periods, or talk to an object with which they may be playing. Accordingly, it is one of the principal objects of the present invention to pro vide a doll structure to which a child may talk in a manner to make a conversation more meaningful.

In the wonderful world of make-believe in which children frequently indulge, it is a great enhancement to the illusion created by the child if some degree of animation is injected into the make-believe tableau. Accordingly, another object of the invention is to provide a doll which in one aspect has a typical dolls face and which may be converted to remove the dolls face to expose a reflective surface behind the dolls face so that the child playing with the doll may look into the reflective surface, and carry a conversation with the image reflected by the reflective surface.

Still another object of the invention is the provision of a doll in which the face structure is easily and quickly removable and replaceable.

The invention possesses other objects and features of advantage, some of which, with the foregoing, will be apparent from the following description and the drawing. It is to be understood, however, that the invention is not limited to the embodiment illustrated and described, as it may be embodied in various forms within the scope of the appended claims.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION In terms of broad inclusion, the convertible doll structure of the invention comprises a conventional doll body appropriately dressed in any style to represent any given nationality and male or female. The doll body is provided with a head portion having simulated hair, and a front section of the head portion is flattened to receive thereon a reflective member such as a mirror, the outer periphery of which coincides with the outer periphery of the flattened head section. Means are provided constituting a conventional doll face attached to the body conveniently through an element of clothing on the doll body, which is applicable over the reflective surface to conceal the reflective surface so that the doll assumes the typical appearance of a doll. Means are provided to retain the doll face in position and which permits removal of the doll face to convert the doll so as to expose the reflective surface.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the doll shown with its convertible face in place to present the appearance of a conventional doll.

FIG. 2 is a perspective view of the doll with the detachable face portion removed to expose an underlying reflective surface.

FIG. 3 is a fragmentary side elevational view showing the manner in which the face is removed and replaced over the reflective surface.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT In terms of greater detail, the convertible doll structure of the invention comprises a doll body designated generally by the numeral 2, and including a head portion 3 having simulated hair 4, arms 5, legs 6, and dressed in an appropriate costume 7.

As shown best in FIG. 3, the front portion of the head 3 is provided with a flat surface 8 formed by slicing away the front face portion 9 of the head embodying the face 9. This front face portion of the head, contains the eyes 10, nose 11 and lips 12, which characterize the doll face, and is also provided with strands 13 of simulated hair surrounding the face.

Mounted on the flat surface 8 which remains when the face portion 9 is removed from the doll head in an unbreakable reflective member 14, secured in any suitable manner to the flattened portion of the head and providing a reflective surface 15 into which a little girl or boy playing with the doll may see its image.

When the child playing with the doll wishes to cover the reflective surface 15 and restore the doll to its typical doll appearance, then the face portion 9 is lifted into position as viewed in FIG. 1, and the elastic band 16 is disposed around the back of the head as shown in FIG. 3. The elastic band serves as means to-detachably retain the face portion 9 of the head in proper position so that the doll has a substantially lifelike appearance in which the reflective surface of the mirror 14 is concealed.

While there are several different ways in which the face portion 9 of the doll head may be detachably retained to conceal the mirror, the means illustrated are preferred. To accomplish this purpose, the face portion 9 of the doll head is connected by a flexible strap 17 to the waistband of the costume worn by the doll so that when the face portion is in place, as shown in FIG. 1, the appearance of the doll is in all respects complete.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new and novel and sought to be protected by letters patent is as follows:

1. A convertible doll structure comprising:

a. a doll body including a body portion and a head portion attached thereto, said head portion including a front face portion and a flat surface portion, said flat surface portion being formed by slicing away the front face portion; and

b. means including a mirror surface for reflecting light mounted on the flat surface of said head portion;

c. means adapting said face portion to be detachably retained in position to conceal said mirror surface, said face portion being complementary to said flat surface portion, whereby said doll may project a doll face when said face portion is so retained and may reflect the image of a user when said face portion is not so retained.

Claims

1. A convertible doll structure comprising: a. a doll body including a body portion and a head portion attached thereto, said head portion including a front face portion and a flat surface portion, said flat surface portion being formed by slicing away the front face portion; and b. means including a mirror surface for reflecting light mounted on the flat surface of said head portion; c. means adapting said face portion to be detachably retained in position to conceal said mirror surface, said face portion being complementary to said flat surface portion, whereby said doll may project a doll face when said face portion is so retained and may reflect the image of a user when said face portion is not so retained.
