THRESHL OR DOOR=SILL..
SPBCFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 386,084, dated July l0, 1888. Application led Mart-h 3, 1888. Serial No. QHLOGG. (No model.)
T0 @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LEwrs M. PRATT and JAMEs M. WALKER, citizens of the United States, residing at Belleville, in the county of Republic and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Thresholds or DoorSills, of which the following is aspeciiication.
Our invention has reference to thresholds or door-sills; and it consists in the improved construction, hereinafter set forth and explained, whereby the height of the sill may be regulated so that the bottom edge of the door can swing in close proximity thereto at all times.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a part of our improved sill. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the dotted line a' .r of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a like view showing the parts adjusted to increase the height of the sill.
The body A of the sill consists of a strip triangular in cross section, with its upper angular portion removed to present a horizontal top face, (t. The inclined sides of the body A are each provided with a series of slots, b. The outer faces of said inclined sides each forms a bearing for a plate, c, the upper edge of which is beveled to correspond with the plane of the top face. Bolts d pass through said plates and through the slots b, and their threaded ends e project beyond the under side of the inclined portions to receive washers f and clamp-nuts g. The lower edges of the plates c are beveled to present a horizontal face to bear upon the floor.
The body A is provided with a series of openings, through which screws 7i pass to secure the sill to the door. The outer faces of the body are provided at or near their ends with a series of longitudinal notches, t', and the plates c are provided with the slots] directly over these notches.
The position of parts is such as they ordinarily occupy. Should the lower edge of the door be a greater distance from the tloor than usual, by reason of shrinkage or otherwise, the central screws, h, may be removed, so that the bolts can be rotated to loosen the side plates, which can then be moved downward so that the body A can be elevated relative to its base. The clamp-nuts can then be tightened to rigidly hold the parts in the doorway. Of course the improved sill can be adjusted so that the door edge can swing at all times in close proximity to the body A, thereby avoiding the undesirable draft, cracks, or openings beneath the doors. The side plates are adjusted by inserting the end of the screw-driver through the slotsj` into engagement with the notches i and then using it as a lever, as will be readily understood. The construction and arrangement of parts is such that the sill will not only be strong and durable, but can be manufactured at a very slight expense.
The under faces of the sides adjacent to the sides of the slots b are recessed, thereby providing the seats 7c for the washer and nut, so that each bolt, which is provided with an ordinary screw-head, can be turned from the outer side of the sill to rigidly clamp the washer and nut in its particular recess.
le claiml. The combination, in a door-sill, of the body A, having inclined sides, plates bearing on said sides, and devices for adjusting said plates, substantially as described.
2. The combination, in a doorsill, ofthe body A, having inclined sides provided with elongated slots, plates bearing on said sides, and bolts passing th rough said plates and slots, and clamp-nuts for said bolts, substantially as described.
3. The combination, in a dooresill, of the body A, having its horizontal top face and inclined sides slotted, as described, plates c, beveled at their upper and lower edges, and bolts passing through said plates and slots and provided with clamp nuts, substantially as described.
4. The combination, with the body A, hav ing inclined sides slotted, as described, and provided on their under side with recesses intersecting said slots, plates bearing on said sides, and screw-bolts passing through said plates and slots, and clamp-nuts engaging said bolts and resting in said recesses, substantial ly as described.
5. The combination o'l' the body A, having the inclined sides provided with the notches t', and the side plates having the slots] over said notches, as set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto aflixcd our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
LEVIS M. PRATT. JAMES M. VALKER.
