NUT-LOCKING- DEVICE FOR RAIL-JOINTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 18, 1908.
Application filed. July 15, 1907. Serial No. 383,768.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD RIoHARDs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Akion, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locking Devices for Rail-Joints; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to locking the meeting ends of rail sections together and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings,Figure 1 is a side elevation of a rail joint illustrating the application of my improvements Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line 2*2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail erspective view of one of the fastening mem ers employed to lock or hold the locking bar or plate securely in position to the rail.
Referring to the drawings for a more par ticular description of the invention, the nuinerals 1, 2, and 3 represent respectively the cross ties, the adjacent or abutting ends of two of the track rails, and the angle or fish plates commonly employed as a means for fastening said ends together. Bolts 4 having nuts 5 on their threaded ends are arranged at the abutting ends of the track rails and coact with the fish or angle plates to form a fastening therefor. A locking bar or plate 6, having a pair of longitudinally disposed outwardly extending parallel flanges 7 on its outer face at each end to provide channels therebetween for the passage of the nuts and is arranged in position to the rails so that the parallel flanges thereof may engage the op posite edges of the nuts and prevent them from working loose on the bolts. Said locking bar 6 is also provided with flanges 7 on-its upper and lower surfaces which serve to respectively contact with the under face of the tread of the rail and the upper face of the flange 7 thereof. The locking bar is securely fastened in removable position by fastening members 8 and said bar is recessed at both ends. These members are preferably in the form of headless spikes having sharp lower edges to enable them to be easily driven in the cross ties 1, and being bent inwardly substantially at right angles near their upper or opposite ends to form inwardly horizontally projecting engaging portions 9, adapted to engage the outer face and ends of the looking bar or plate and hold it securely in position.
It will also be noted that while the fastening members hold the locking bar or plate securely in position so long as they are in osition in the cross ties, should it be desirab e to remove the locking bar for any reason it is only necessary to remove the fastening members from position, which may be easily and readily accomplished.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without re quiring a more extended explanation.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters- Patent is In a structure for securing the meeting ends of railroad rails together, the combination with the meeting ends of two rails sections with their flanged portions mounted on the ties of a road bed, fish plates arranged on opposite sides of the webs of the rails, said plates and webs having registering openings therein, screw threaded bolts in said openings of the webs and plates, nuts on the bolts, a bar having flanges struck therefrom so as to provide central longitudinal channels therebetween, said bar being recessed at both ends and said flanges being inserted over the upper and lower surfaces of the nuts, and said bar being also provided. with, longitudinal flanges on its upper and lower edge portions to contact respectively with the under face of the tread of the rail and the upper surface of the flange of the rail, and means at each end of said plate for holding the same in position.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of subscribing witnesses:
RICHARD RICHARDS.
Witnesses:
