FRACTURE APPARATUS.

Specification of `Letters Patent No.

To all whom may concern:

Be it known that I, LEWIS POST, of the town of Lodi and in the county of Seneca new and useful Machine for Reducing Fractures of the Leg, Being a Splint with Extending and Counter-Extending Power; and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description of the same, reference being had to the drawings annexed making a part of this speciiication.

Figure l, represents the interior of the splint excavated so as to suit the form of the leg, with two sheet iron or brass slides, in both of which, fissures are cut for one or more buttons that pass through to be fastened into the wood; the head Oi' this button resting upon the slides, so as to coniine their motion in aline withscrews, and to keep them closely to the wood. See Fig. 2, o and o.

Fig. 2 represents the outside of the splint, with a portion of the spring passing over the heel, and with screws and burs of iron or brass, (a and c) being right and left screws for extension, and b a, a right and left screw for iexing the splint. F is the leather fastened by screws to the upper part of the splint and formed so as to suit the upper part of the body to which it is ap plied. y

Fig. 3 represents the machine applied to the leg, flexed at an angle of 45. H, a round cushioned strap, is fastened' to the upper part of the splint, and then firmly buckled in the groin. The strap below the knee is then buckled, and the knee brought lirmly to the splint. These two points being se- 3,859, dated December 16, 1844.

splint with screws; also the spring in which a` fissure is cut, so as to allow a screw to pass through from the foot piece. This screw is fastened to the foot piece, and a thumb bur is used to confine the spring and footpiece, when motion is inadmissible.

I do not claim a splint susceptible of extension, nor the use of screws for extending them, but

What I do claim, is

Making the splints which are thus extended, to constitute the double inclined plane to be flexed and extended in the manner substantially as herein set forth.

Believing the above described splintlhas not been known or used, prior to the invention of your petitioner, he therefore prays that Letters Patent of the United States may be granted to him therefor, vesting in him and his legal representatives the exclusive right to the same, upon the terms `and conditions expressed in the act of Congress in that case made and provided, he having paid thirty dollars into the treasury and complied with other provisions of said act.
