Description

J. E. CHENEY.
Water Cooler.
NO. 38,559. I Patented May 19. 1863.
lllll Witnesses= Inventor,
j gj I $0M am AM. PHOTO-LITHQCQNN. (OSBORNE'S PROCESS) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN FILTER AND COOLER COMBINED.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 38,559, dated May 19, 1863.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
- Be it known that 1, JAMES E. CHENEY, of the city of Rochester, and county of Monroe, and State of New York, have invented an Improved Combined Filter and Cooler for Rain, River, or Lake Water; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation.
Like letters designate similar parts in both the figures.
The body A may be constructed of metal but I prefer oak, as least injurious to the water. Within this tub the reservoir B, which may be constructed of metal or stoneware, rests on the packing a few inches from the bottom of the tub, and is also surrounded by the packing nearly to its top. This reservoir has openings in the bottom for the entrance of water, as shown by the arrowsin Fig. 2, and is connected with the faucet by a pipe leading to the outside. The reservoir is easily cleaned from the top.
. The principal utility of my invention is the c )mbination of an open-topped reservoirpacked in coal and gravel with a filter in such amanner that the packing serves as a cooler for the reservoir, while the open top allows access for ice direct into the water which has been filtered and is ready for use, thus requiring but a small quantity of ice in comparison with what would be necessary if the ice laid in the water above the packing. The pan 0 may be used in connection with it as a receptacle for small dishes or bottles containing articles which it is desirable to keep cool, and as the article as a whole will be used extensively in stores and offices where a refrigerator would not be re quired, this latter addition to the filter and cooler will be much valued. The pan 0 is provided with a close-fitting cover of any suitable material, and the tub a is alsoprovided with a cover, which forconvenience may be hinged to the back, thus forming a chamber of confined air over and around. those portions of the refrigerator-pan G and reservoir B which extend above the packing, thus keeping their contents much cooler than they would be otherwise. I am aware that the simple combination of filter and cooler. is not new, and that filters have been made by surrounding the reservoir for the filtered water with the media 'of filtration, and causing the water to perco late in its descent through such medium, and to ascend into the reservoir through perforations in the bottom, as shown in the patent to John Fitch, March 22, 1859, and elsewhere.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to
