  • PIVOT HINGE This invention relates to a pivot hinge mainly, though not only, for use on cupboard or cabinet doors.
  • An object of the invention is to provide such a hinge which is very easy and quick to fit and therefore economical in labour costs.
  • Another object of the invention is to provide a hinge which is wholly concealed when installed.
  • a further object is to provide a hinge which requires no adjustment in fitting and which may be applied to any point along a door or the like, for example to the vertical centreline of the door.
  • the invention in one aspect, comprises a pivot hinge including two parts, the first part including an elongated hollow bush and the second part including a pin rotatably engageable in the bush and a threaded portion fixed to and colinear with said pin.
  • the second part preferably has a screw fastening fixed to and co-linear with said pin.
  • FIG. 1 shows an exploded view of hinge components
  • FIG. 2 shows in section a complete hinge using the components of FIG. 1 mounted to a cabinet door
  • FIG. 3 shows a modification of the hinge of FIG. 2.
  • an elongated bush 10 is provided into which a pin 1l fits rotatably.
  • Removal of a hinge according to the invention is also very simple, involving merely unscrewing the two pins 1l.
  • a helical spring (not shown) can be incorporated in the pin-screw combination 11-12 so that when the fitting is pivoted the spring is wound and returns the fitting to unpivoted position.
  • the lower hinge assembly A is identical with that shown in FIG. l, the same references being used.
  • the upper assembly B is further simplified.
  • a bush 17 is mounted in a hole in plate 15, and a second bush 18 in a hole in the edge of door 14.
  • a spacing washer 19 (as before) lies between plate 15 and door 14.
  • a pin 20 is rotatably engaged in both bushes 17, 18.
  • the upper assembly at B is thus simpler and cheaper than that at A. Installation of the hinge is similar to that for the FIG. 2 assembly.
  • hinges described may be fitted in much less time than prior hinges and by relatively unskilled labour, since the only tools necessary are a drill, a simple jig and a screwdriver.
  • Doors may be fitted without horizontal and vertical framing for individual door openings.
  • the hinges are very versatile. They may be centremounted instead of edge-mounted to give 360 swing orv may be horizontal to give lift-up hinging.
  • Pin l1 has an end threaded part 12 of somewhat greater diameter.
  • a nylon washer 13 fits over pin 1l, but abuts the end of bush 10.
  • a door 14 is pivoted between top and bottom plates 15, 16 by two of the assemblies of FIG. 1, vertically aligned with one another.
  • Installation is simply a matter of positioning door 14 as required and drilling a hole through plate 15 or 16 and into the door edge, the drill used providing both a hole in the door to accommodate bush 10 with a push fit and a widened part in plate 15 or 16 into which screw l2 can be screwed.
  • the vertical alignment of the two assemblies is obtained'by use of a simple jig. Nylon washers 13 are positioned and the top and bottom assemblies screwed into place with the heads of the screws flush or countersunk as shown.
  • the door pivots about the common vertical axis of both assemblies.
  • a nylon washer 13 serves both to space the door 14 from plates 15 and 16 and to give a low-friction pivot. It will immediately be seen that mounting of the door is extremely easy and quick and that the pivot may be placed at any position along the door.
  • the pivot hinge of this invention is particularly suitable for use with particle board constructions.
  • the invention may be used for hinging doors, windows or any other pivoted fittings either about a vertical axis as described or about a horizontal axis.
  • a door as claimed in claim 1 including a spacing washer between said door and each said plate, said washer surrounding said pin and abutting the end of each bush of the assembly.
