The expanding and clamping means comprise a radially movable clamping bar, which is coupled to said second shell portion and adapted to cooperate with said first shell portion to clamp a strip end portion. The second shell portion is pivotally movable and forms a transition member adapted to guide a strip portion adjacent to said clamped strip end portion. Each of said shell portions extends peripherally from a free end disposed adjacent to the other shell portion to a pivoted end. The clamping bar engages said free end of said first shell portion and is adapted to clamp said strip end portion against said free end of said first shell portion and is radially outwardly movable to expand said shell portions. A bearing is provided, in which said pivoted end of said second shell portion is mounted and which permits said second shell portion to perform a pivotal movement and a movement substantially in the direction in which said bar is radially movable. Said bar is coupled to said free end of said second shell portion so that said second shell portion is moved substantially in the same direction as said bar during a radially outward movement of said bar.

No. 3,774,862, filed May 8, 1972, discloses a reel for coiling strip, particularly metal strip in plants for manufacturing and processing strip, which consists of preferably pivoted expansible shell portions, which are adjustable by expanding bars, and a pivotally movable transition member.
It is an object of the invention to improve the reel disclosed in said prior application so that both a reliable damping of the strip and a satisfactory transition of the strip from its clamped portion to the coil are ensured.
In a reel for coiling strip, particularly metal strip, in plants for manufacturing and/or processing strip, which comprises preferably pivoted, expansible shell portions, which are adjustable by means of expanding bars, and a pivotally movable transition member, this object is accomplished in that the transition member is coupled to a radially movable clamping bar by interengaging therewith, one expansible shell portion and the displaceable clamping bar are adapted to clamp the strip whereas the other expansible shell portion, which is coupled to the clamping bar, serves as a transition member. Y
A reel for coiling strip, particularly metal strip in plants for manufacturing and/or processing strip, which comprises two pivoted expansible shell portions, which are adjustable by means of a radially movable expanding bar, which engages the shell portions adjacent to their free ends, one of said expansible shell portions defining a gap in which a strip end position can be clamped, is improved in accordance with the invention in that the gap is defined between the free end of said one expansible shell portion and the associated engaging surface of the expanding bar, and that the second expansible shell portion is coupled to the expanding bar and is held in a bearingso as to be pivotally movable and displaceable substantially in the same direction as the expanding bar. In such an arrangement, the second expansible shell portion, which is mounted to be pivotally movable and displaceable, is held against the engaging surface of the expanding bar by a spring which acts in the direction of the pivotal movement, and is held in coupling engagement with a step of the expanding bar by a returning spring acting in the direction in which the shell portion is displaceable.
The bearing for the second expansible shell portion permits of a pivotal movement and a displacement thereof and preferably comprises a member which has the form of a segment of a cylinder and which is rotatable in a recess defined by a part-cylindrical surface and has a flat side face with which the second expansible shell portion is in sliding contact. In such an arrangement, the pivotally movable and displaceable, ex-
pansible shell portion extends around about 90 of the periphery of the reel.
An embodiment of the reel according to the invention is shown by way of example on the drawing and will be described hereinafter.
FIGS. 1 and 2 are, respectively, a transverse sectional view and a longitudinal sectional view showing a reel according to the invention.
FIGS. 3 and 4 are enlarged sectional views showing the clamped and transitional portions of strip of different gages.
As is apparent from FIG. 1, the reel comprises at the portion in which the leading end of the strip is to be clamped an expansible shell portion, 7a, which is pivotally movable in an outward direction from the remaining part of periphery of the reel. The expansible shell portion 7a serves also as a transition member and is coupled to a radially displaceably mounted expanding bar 8 by interengaging therewith at a step 9. A clamped leading end of strips 10 and 11 of different gages is shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, respectively. The expanding bar cooperates with a projection 12 of another expansible shell portion 7b, which serves as a clamping member for clamping the leading end of the strip. The expanding bar 8 is seated in a longitudinal groove 13 and together with the projection 12 defines a narrow gap 14.
It is also apparent from FIG. 2 that the reel is mounted only at one end at 15. The expanding bar 8 is provided with guide pins 8a, which engage a centrally disposed wedge bar 16, which is axially displaceable in both directions C, e.g., by pneumatic or hydraulic.
means.
The expansible shell portion 7b which serves as a clamping memberis hinged at 17 and terminates in the projection 12 having a flat surface, which defines the gap 14 with the expanding bar 8. A spring 18 urges the expansible shell portion 7b against the expanding bar 8, which in turn holds the expansible shell-portion 7b'in engagement with a stop 19 formed in a reel body 6.
The expansible shell portion 7a which serves as a transition member is mounted in a bearing 20 so as to be pivotally movable and displaceable and by a'spring 21 is held in interengagement with the expanding bar 8 at a step 9 so that the shell portion 7a is coupled to the bar 8. The bearing 20 for the expansible shell portion 7a serving as a transition member comprises a member in the shape of a segment of cylinder. Said member is rotatable in a part-cylindrical, concave recess 22 and has a flat surface 23 with which the expansible shell portion is in sliding contact. A return spring 24 acts on the angled stop portion 25 and serves to return the expansible shell portion 7a and to hold it in coupling engagement. As is particularly apparent from FIGS. 3 and 4, the expansible shell portion 7a serving as a transition member extends around of the periphery of the reel so that the bearing 20 and the return spring 24 cooperate to ensure a displacement of the shell portion 7a at its ,end coupled to the expanding bar 8. As is apparent from FIGS. 3 and 4, the coupling arrangement and the flat transition prevent a formation of kinks in the transitional portions of the strip between the clamped and coiled portions thereof.
