Definitions

  • ABSTRACT For location and extraction of any desired one of a number of cards or other sheetlike objects filed at random in an open-top enclosure, indentations and nonindentations of prescribed unit width are formed on the upper edge of each of such sheetlike objects in accordance with one of a set of code characters assigned thereto.
  • a selector mechanism mounted on the open top of the enclosure for linear motion transversely of the sheetlike objects accommodated therein comprises a plurality of probing elements arranged in register respectively with the indentations and non-indentations of each sheetlike object, and manually operable means for selectively depressing the probing elements in accordance with the code character assigned to a desired one of the sheet-like objects. These sheetlike objects are then caused, perhaps magnetically, to tend to move upwardly against the depressed probing elements, with the result that only the desired sheetlike object is permitted to rise from among the other objects because the depressed probing elements are all received in the respective indentations of the desired sheetlike object.
