, UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES L. OOONNOR, OE NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO THE NEW YORK IN FLOOR OUSPIDOR COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
CUSPIDOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 384,587, dated June 12, 1888.
Application filed January 23,1888. Serial No. 261,618. (No model.) Patented in England October 15, 1887, No. 13,985.
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES L. OCoNNoE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuspidors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the construction of cuspidors, by means of which they are adapted for use in cars or railwaycoaches; and the objects of my improvements are to construct a cuspidor of cheap and durab'e pattern, and to provide means for closing the sinlrhole while the car is in motion.
The invention described in this application has been patented in England by Letters Patent No. 13,985, October 15, 1887.
I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of the cuspidor when ready for use. Fig. 2 shows the cuspidor in perspective, with the several parts ready to be placed in position.
Similar letters refer to similar parts.
The funnel orsink Ais provided with flanges F and I and a sink-hole, H, and is designed to be supported between the two floors of a car, the sink-hole H fitting into a hole provided for it in the lower door, and the flange F being rabbeted with the upper floor, tlush with the surface thereof, and held in position by the screws G. The plug D is designed to tit the sink-hole H, and to be removed therefrom by means of the handle E. The shallow funnel C, with central opening, J, is supported on the flange I. The grating B rests upon the funnel C and is flush with the Hoor.
It will be observed that the operation of my improvement is such that when the sink-hole H is closed by the plug D, and the funnel C and grating B are in position, the cnspidor is ready for use, there being no possibility for a draft through the cuspidor into the car, and when it becomes desirable to empty the euspidor and cleanse it, this can be done by removing the grating, shallow funnel C, and plug D by means of the handle E. y
I am aware that previous to my invention cuspidors adapted for use in cars have been made with a sink ruiming through the floor of the car, in combination with'disk and grating. I therefore do not claim such combination broadly, nor do I desire to secure hereby any claim to a cuspidor without a sink provided with means for the escape of the contents thereof, as I have made application for Letters Patent of the United States for an improvement in this class of cuspidors in application No. 244,774, tiled July 19, 1887; but
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secu re by Letters Patent, is-
In a cuspidor, a combination of the sink A, let into a floor, the top being flush with the upper surface and provided with a plug, D, for stopping its lower aperture, said plug being provided with a pivot-rod, E, for removing the same, the handle of which is normally covered by the funnel C, the shallow funnel C, located inside the sink A and resting upon a rabbet on the interior of the edge of said sink, and the grating B, resting upon the edge of the funnel O and closing the mouth of the sink A, substantially as described.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 31st day of December, A. D. 1887.
JAS. L. OCONNOR.
