No. 107,952, filed Jan. 20, 1971, now US. Pat. No. 3,732,709, dated May I5, 1973, for LOCK MEANS FOR RELATIVELY SLID- ABLE CLOSURES.
The invention relates to novel structures of lock means, particularly adapted for double hung and sliding by-pass windows. Such closure elements are conventionally mounted in pairs within a jamb on trackways so that the related edges of the windows overlap when in closed position and which may be moved relative to each other into open position.
Most sliding closures comprise at least two panels, each consisting of relatively narrow frame members, generally extruded aluminum, steel or wood, which carry a pane of glass. One or more panels may be stationary, and the movable panel may slide either outside or inside of the stationary panel.
Heretofore it has been difficult toprovide fool-proof means to lock the windows in closed position. Jimmying has been relatively easy by slightly lifting one closure relative to the other or pulling out the lock ataching means or moving one closure out of plane relative to the other closure. Additionally, conventional locks have been found unsightly or not adaptable to some makes or styles of windows because of structural variations.
In the present disclosure, a lock element is removably mounted on one of the pairs of closures abutted by the related closure, and the abutted end of the lock element is serrated to prevent its displacement from the abutted closure. A mounting place for attachment to the closure on which the lock element is carried may also be provided as a convenient attaching means for the lock element. Key actuated means is carried by the lock element to secure it mounted.
it is therefore an object of the invention to provide lock means of the character referred to. Another object is to provide a novelly constructed lock element for a slidable closure, with key actuated means to engage in the slidable closure and barbed means to prevent displacement from the abutted closure. It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel lock element and mounting plate of the character described.
Another object is to provide a lock assembly which is not expensive or difficult to manufacture, which may be readily applied to a slidable closure, which is adequately versatile to lock all conventional movable closures, and which is very efficient in use.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent with reference to the following description and accompanying drawings.

FIG. 4 is an elevational view of the underside of the lock element.
Referring to the accompanying drawings which show an exemplary embodiment of the invention, the lock is intended for use with upper 11 and lower 12 sliding windows, which comprise a glass panel 13 surrounded by a frame 14 and mounted in a jamb 15. When in closed position, the complemental margins 18 and 19 of the windows overlap. To lock the closures against relative movement while in close positions, lock 10 is provided, which comprises an elongated body 22, preferably of bar stock, having at one end a flange 23, which carries on its outside face a series of serrations 25 or barbs. Adjacent to the other end of the body is a stud 24 projecting therefrom. Intermediate the stud and flange is the key actuated lock 26, which comprises a sleeve 27 that is secured in an aperture 28 in the body 22, as by means of a set screw 29. A lock barrel 31 is rotatable in sleeve 27-, normally held against rotation by conventional key-actuated tumblers (not shown). The rear face of sleeve 27 is formed with an axially aligned circular projection 32, apertured to receive therethrough for rotation a stem 33 carried by the lock barrel. Mounted firmly on the stem is a locking eccentric 34 so arranged that when in nonlocking position it aligns with the projection 32.
A mounting plate 40 may be provided, which may be secured to the frame 14 of upper window 11; and the frame may be drilled with a relatively small hole 41 to receive mounting plate sleeve 42 adaptable to receive stud 24 and a relatively large hole 43 underlying mounting plate aperture 44 through which the aligned eccentric 34 may pass for free rotation therein when the lock is secured on the closure. The mounting plate 40 is secured to the frame by means of screws 45 attached to the frame through beveled apertures 46 in the plate. Mounting plate aperture 44 is adapted to accommodate lock barrel projection 32. This mounting plate 40 is particularly useful where the frame material is soft metal or wood, but where the frame is hollow and adequate to secure the locked eccentric and projecting stud its use may be disregarded.
in use, the mounting plate may be secured as shown, and the lock element is laid against the inside face of the outside closure 11, which its flanged end insubstantial abutment with the edge of the inside closure, and the eccentric in its non-locking position, as to permit the stud 24 to enter the hole 41 through sleeve 42 and the eccentric 34 to enter hole 43 through aperture 44, with the barrel projection 32 seated therein. The serrations 25 bear against the frame of inside closure 12. When a key, inserted in the barrel 31, is rotated onehalf revolution, the eccentric 34 is carried into locking position behind the wall of the mounting plate 40.
Compensation for variances in the thickness of the material of the mounting plate (or the frame 14 where no mounting plate is employed)is afforded by readjustment of the position of sleeve 27 upon manipulation of the holding set screw 29.
It will be observed that when the lock element is securely positioned as above described and locked, there is provided a positive abutment lying in the path of each closure member as to prevent their sliding relative to one another.
While I have described a preferred embodiment of my invention, the device described and illustrated is not intended to be restrictive, as many changes in the structure can be easily accomplished without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention. Accordingly,
I do not desire to be limited to the exact construction described.
I claim:
1. Lock means for a closure assembly includingat least one relatively. movable closure element having marginal portions overlapping another element of said assembly, comprising, a body adapted to be mounted on one of said elements in abutment with the other element, a mounting plate adapted for attachment to said one element beneath said body, means on said body to prevent displacement of said body relative to said other element, and a lock assembly carried by said body, said mounting plate having a sleeve adaptable to project into said one element and means for receiving said lock assembly therethrough, and said lock assembly extending through said mounting plate and being engageable in said one element beneath said receiving means to removably secure the body in place.
2. The lock means recited in claim 1, in which the body has a stud adaptable to project into said sleeve when the body is secured in place.
3. Lock means for a closure assembly including at least one relatively movable closure element having marginal portions overlapping another element of said assembly, comprising, a body adapted to be mounted on one of'said elements, a flange on one end of said body in position to abut the other element, serrations on the flange disposed parallel to said first element and engageable with said other element to prevent displacement of the body relative to said other element, and a lock assembly carried by said body engageable in said one element on which it is mounted to secure the body in place.
4. The lock means recited in claim 3, wherein the flange is angularly disposed relative to said body so as to be spaced from said one element.
5. The lock means recited in claim 3, which includes a mounting plate adapted for attachment to said one element beneath said body, and the mounting plate has an aperture to permit said lock assembly to engage in said one element.
6. The lock means recited in claim 5, wherein the body includes a stud adaptable to project into said one element, and said mounting plate has a recess for receiving the stud.
7. The lock means recited in claim 5, wherein the lock element includes a projection having an eccentric normally aligned therewith and rotatable to engage in said one element, and the plate has an aperture to receive the projection therein and the aligned eccentric therethrough, said plate preventing withdrawal of the eccentric from the plate when the same is rotated out of alignment with the projection.

Claims (7)

1. Lock means for a closure assembly including at least one relatively movable closure element having marginal portions overlapping another element of said assembly, comprising, a body adapted to be mounted on one of said elements in abutment with the other element, a mounting plate adapted for attachment to said one element beneath said body, means on said body to prevent displacement of said body relative tO said other element, and a lock assembly carried by said body, said mounting plate having a sleeve adaptable to project into said one element and means for receiving said lock assembly therethrough, and said lock assembly extending through said mounting plate and being engageable in said one element beneath said receiving means to removably secure the body in place.
2. The lock means recited in claim 1, in which the body has a stud adaptable to project into said sleeve when the body is secured in place.
3. Lock means for a closure assembly including at least one relatively movable closure element having marginal portions overlapping another element of said assembly, comprising, a body adapted to be mounted on one of said elements, a flange on one end of said body in position to abut the other element, serrations on the flange disposed parallel to said first element and engageable with said other element to prevent displacement of the body relative to said other element, and a lock assembly carried by said body engageable in said one element on which it is mounted to secure the body in place.
4. The lock means recited in claim 3, wherein the flange is angularly disposed relative to said body so as to be spaced from said one element.
5. The lock means recited in claim 3, which includes a mounting plate adapted for attachment to said one element beneath said body, and the mounting plate has an aperture to permit said lock assembly to engage in said one element.
6. The lock means recited in claim 5, wherein the body includes a stud adaptable to project into said one element, and said mounting plate has a recess for receiving the stud.
7. The lock means recited in claim 5, wherein the lock element includes a projection having an eccentric normally aligned therewith and rotatable to engage in said one element, and the plate has an aperture to receive the projection therein and the aligned eccentric therethrough, said plate preventing withdrawal of the eccentric from the plate when the same is rotated out of alignment with the projection.
