WALL MOUNTED SECURITY BOX BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates generally to improvements in receptacles and it relates more particularly to an improved security box or safe and the method of securing the box to a wall.
In many places such as homes and offices and particularly in transient accommodations such as hotels, motels, clubs and the like it is frequently desirable to at least temporarily store valuables such as money, jewelry, securities, documents and such objects where they would be relatively safe but readily available. Many types of wall safes and floor safes have heretofore been available and proposed but these possess numerous drawbacks and disadvantages. They are frequently awkward and bulky devices, commonly easy to burglarize, difficult, expensive and inconvenient to install, of
unattractive appearance, of little versatility and adapt- It is a principal object of the present invention to provide an improved receptacle.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an improved security box or safe and an improved Still another object of the present invention is to provide an improved wall mounted security box and an improved method of installing the same.
A further object of the present invention is to provide an improved wall mounted security box which is highly useful in homes and transient accommodationssuch as hotels, motels, clubs and the like. 7
Still a further object of the present invention is to provide a device of the above nature characterized by its ruggedness, reliability, burglar proof properties, ease and convenience of installation, compactness and high versatility and adaptability.
The above and other objects of the present invention will become apparent from a reading of the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing which illustrates a preferred embodiment thereof.
In a sense the present invention contemplates the provision of an improved security receptacle having an access opening in a wall thereof, a frame delineating the access opening and including opposite first and second side legs and first leg having an inwardly facing first channel and the second leg having a forwardly facing second channel a closure member removably registering with the opening and having a first edge separably engaging the first channel and a rearwardly directed flange along an opposite edge separably engaging the second channel so that the closure memberis swingable about the first channel to transfer the flange into and out of engagement with the second channel, and lock means carried by the closure member and movable between lock and release positions respectively preventing the movement of the flange from the second channel and freeing the closure member to permit such movement.
In its preferred form the box has rectangular walls and the access opening is rectangular with top and bottom end legs having forwardly open channels. The closure member is likewise rectangular and has rearwardly directed flanges along its end edges separably engaging the frame and leg channels. The lock means includes a key controlled shank supporting a latch arm for rotation between a lock position underlying the frame second side leg and an unlock position out of registry therewith.
A side wall of the box has mounting holes. In attaching the box to a wall a paper template is adhered to the wall which is drilled at template designated positions. The box is attached to the wall by expansion bolts which engage the wall bores and the box side wall holes and are expanded by tightening bolt engaging nuts located in the box to firmly secure the box in position.
The improved security box is simple, rugged and reliable and substantially burglar proof. It may besimply and conveniently installed in existing structures or to walls in the construction stage. It is highly useful in transient accommodations since the closure members are interchangeable and may be used with any box. Accordingly, an accommodation occupant is issued a closure member and matching key upon registering so that a random relationship is achieved between the closure keys and the rooms.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring now to the drawing which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the reference numeral 10 generally designates the improved security receptacle which includes a strong box 11 and a closure member 12. The box 11 is mounted on and secured to astructure wall 13 as will be hereinafter described andis formed in a suitable manner of heavy gauged sheet metal or plate. Box 11 includes integrally formed rectangular side walls 14 and 16 top and bottom rectangular walls 17 and rear end wall 18, the front end of the box being provided with a rectangular access opening 19 delineated by a frame 20.
The box side wall 14 is provided at its front end with an inwardly directed flange 21 which terminates in a rearwardly projecting lip 22 spaced inwardly of and parallel to wall 14. A forwardly open channel 23 is disposedalong the inside face of lip 22 and is delineated by a leg defining web 24 spaced inwardly of and parallel to lip 22 and projecting forwardly to a plane rearwardly of flange 21. The web 24 is joined by a transverse web 26 extending across the inner edge of lip 22 with a rearwardly directed flange 27 abutting and welded to the inside face of wall 14.
The box side wall 16 is provided along its front edge with an inwardly directedv flange 28 which is coplanar with flange 21 and defines a second frame leg. An L- v shaped member is located behind flange 28 and includes an arm 29 abutting and welded to wall 16 and an arm 30 spaced rearwardly of and parallel to flange 28 and projecting inwardly thereof, arm 30 and flange 28 delineating an inwardly directed second channel 32.
A pair of laterally extending U-shaped members of similar configuration extend along the forward inside borders of top and bottom walls 17, each of the members including an outer leg 36 abutting and extending to the edge of and welded to a corresponding wall 17, an inwardly directed cross web 37 and a forwardly directed relatively short leg 38 and delineating a forwardly open transversely extending channel 39. Formed in the box side wall 14 proximate each corner thereof is a bolt receiving opening 40.
The closure member 12 includes a rectangular plate 41, corresponding in shape and slightly larger in size to box opening 19. A side edge 42 of plate 41 is free and a rearwardly directed flange 43 is formed along and extends for the full. length of the opposite side edge of plate 41. I
Formed along the top and bottom edges of and extending for the full lengths thereof are rearwardly directed flanges 44 of the same width as flange 43 and being rounded at their free corners as at 46. it should be noted that the thickness of plate 41 is sufficiently less than the width off channel 32 to permit the swinging of the closure member 12 about channel 32 when engaged by plate edge 42 to permit the release of flange 43 from channel 23 forward of flange 21, as shown by broken line in FIG. 5. n
An L-shaped stopped member 46 is positioned on the rear face of plate 41 and is parallel to edge 42 and includes a leg 47 welded to plate 41 and a rearwardly directed leg 48. The leg 48 is so positioned relative to the edge 42 that when the closure member is in its closed position, as shown in FIG. 5, with edge 42 engaging channel 32 and flange 43 engaging channel 23 leg 48 abuts the free edge of flange 30.
A lock 49 which is of conventional construction and operated by a mating key, not shown, includes an externally threaded cylinder 50 mounted on and projecting rearwardly from plate 41 proximate flange 43 and secured to the plate by a nut 51. A key operated tumbler is coaxially housed in cylinder 50 and is provided with a rearwardly directed coaxial flatted shaft to which is affixed a radially projecting latch arm or bolt by means of a nut so that rotation of the tumbler effects the rotation of arm 52. The arm 52 is of such length that when it extends transversely toward edge 42 when closure member 12 is in closed position it projects beyond edge 42 into abutting engagement with the rear face of web 46.
in mounting the box 11 on wall 13 a paper template 54 having locating indicia 56 on its front face corresponding to the positions of wall openings 40 and a pressure sensitive adhesive coating 57 on its rear face is adhered to wall 13 at the desired position of the security box 10. Holes are drilled in wall 13 at the: positions of indicia56 and expansion bolts 58 are inserted in the drilled holes with the threaded expander studs 59 pro jecting beyond the face of wall 13 and the anchoring expansion sleeves 60 fully housed in the drilled holes.
The box wall 14 is then applied to studs 59 which engage corresponding openings 40 and washers 61 and nuts 45 are then applied to studs 59 projecting into box 11. The nuts 65 .are then tightened by a socket wrench or other suitable tool to partially withdraw studs 59 and anchor them to wall 13 by means of expansion sleeves 60 in the known manner and thereby firmly secure the box to the wall.
In applying the closure member 12 to the opening 19, with the latch arm 52 turned to its retracted position inwardly of flange 43 as shown in FIG. 6, the plate edge 42 is inserted into channel 32 with flange 43 being forwardly disposed until stop leg 48 abuts the edge of arm 30. The closure member 12 is then swung to bring flanges 43 and 44 into engagement with channels 23 and 39 respectively. The closure member is locked in its closed position by turning latch arm 52 by means of a mating key inserted in lock 49 to a transversely extending position abutting the rearface of web 26, as shown in FIGS. 3 and 5. ln openingthe box the arm is retracted from web 26 by turning the lock mating key and removing closure member 12 in a manner opposite to its closing as described above.
While there has been described and illustrated a preferred embodiment of the present invention, it is apparent that numerous alterations, omissions and additions may be made without departing from the spirit thereof.
