PACKAGES F BOBBINS The invention relates to packages of bobbins of sewing thread for use on domestic sewing machines. A domestic sewing machine requires a shuttle bobbin or under-bobbin of precise shape and size. Two particular types of under-bobbins are so widely known and used that one or other would fit the great majority of domestic sewing machines. By contrast an over-bobbin of almost any size and shape, provided that it has a suitable bore, can be used on domestic sewing machines in general.
A package according to the invention contains at least one under-bobbin for a domestic sewing machine, and another bobbin, both bobbins being wound with the same type and shade of sewing thread. Preferably the other bobbin also is an under-bobbin for a domestic sewing machine, and most preferably of the other of the two types mentioned above. Alternatively, the other bobbin may be of any size or shape which is desired or convenient for any purpose.
A number of packages according to the invention containing bobbins wound with different shades of thread would provide the domestic user with a selection of threads, each of which could quickly be applied to a sewing machine and used without the necessity of any winding. As bobbins can be wound mechanically to hold substantially more thread than by hand, and there would be no need for the contents of a part-used bobbin, to be removed, there would be a substantial overall saving for the user.
A package according to the invention may contain also a foam-rubber brake for use with the over-bobbin on the sewing machine to control over-run and/or prevent mono-filament or other thread sloughing off the bobbin when in use or idle. The package preferably comprises a backing sheet of cardboard, plastics material or the like on which instructions for use, descriptive, Trade Mark and advertisement matter may be printed, and preferably also a cover of colourless plastics material through which the shade of the thread can be seen. The bobbins may each be of plastics, metal or other material, and the bore may be notched or grooved for re-use if desired.
The invention is illustrated by way of example in the drawings:
FIGS. 1 to 5 of which show a different package according to the invention; and
FIG. 6 is yet another package according to the invention together with a side view.
A single set of reference numerals has been used in all figures so as to avoid repetition. In each Figure, the package comprises an under-bobbin A for a domestic sewing machine of one of the two types mentioned above made of plastics material. The package also contains another bobbin B, which varies from Figure to Figure. Both bobbins A and B are wound with the same type and shade of sewing thread. The packages each have a backing sheet D of cardboard, and a blister cover E of colourless, transparent plastics material through which the colour of the thread can be seen. The cover E has been omitted from FIGS. 1 to 5 for the sake of clarity, but adheres to the front of the backing sheet D and passes over the contents of the package, securing them to the backing sheet.
In FIG. 1, the bobbin B is an under-bobbin for a domestic sewing machine of the other type mentioned above (not the same type as the bobbin A). Both bobbins A and B stand on their edges and are secured to the backing sheet D by the cover. FIGS. 2 and 6 are the same as FIG. 1 except that the bobbins A and B lie on their bases. In the package of FIG. 3, a thread-brake C comprising a bored disk of foam-rubber is also provided for use with the over-bobbin. FIG. 4 is the same as FIG. 3 except that the bobbins A and B and the brake C stand on their edges instead of lying on their bases. In FIG. 5, the other bobbin B is an ordinary reel of sewing thread, useful as an over-bobbin on a domestic sewing machine but not as an under-bobbin.
The packages of FIGS. 1 to 4 and 6 are useful to owners of the great majority of domestic sewing machines which require an under-bobbin of one of the two most common types. The package of FIG. 5 is useful only to owners of domestic sewing machines which requires an under-bobbin of the type contained in the package.
I claim:
1. A package for bobbins of the type used with domestic sewing machines, comprising a backing means and a cover secured to said backing means to form a package, at least two under bobbins for domestic sewing machines disposed within said package, each of said bobbins being wound with the same type and shade of thread, each of said under bobbins being of a different type such that both bobbins are adapted to fit the majority of domestic sewing machines.
