SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 383,650, dated May 29, 1888.

Be it known that I, MATHEW LASPEYRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brunswick, in the county of Glynn and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in bedsteads; and it consists in the employment of tie-rods secured at one end to the head, foot, and side boards, and at their opposite ends to two plates which are centrally con nected by a single-screw clamp adapted to simultaneously adjust the said parts, all of which will be more fully hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, wherein like letters of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 represents a top plan view of a bedstead with my improvement shown in connection therewith. Fig. 2

A indicates the head-board,B the footboard, and C O the side boards. At the central portion of the head and foot boards A and B and near each end of the side boards, 0 O, bracket-castings D are secured, which are formed with integralapertured ears or lugs d. The hooked ends 6 of the rods E engage with the apertured ears of the said castings D, the opposite ends of the said rods E being secured to the three corners of the diamond-shaped coupling'plates F, which are provided with apertures for this purpose. The other corner of each plate is formed with an aperture, f, through which pass the hooked ends 9, formed with the rods G of the central swivel-clamp, G. The said clamp has the form of two conical nuts, 9, engaging with the inner opposing right and left screw-threaded ends of the said rods G, and the said nuts are connected together by the two longitudinal side bars, 9. The said side bars enable the clamp to be easily grasped to turn it. The clamp, as will be seen, is also verylight, having all of the metal between the nuts cutaway with the exception of the side bars.

bedstead are set up and joined in the usual manner, the tendency is,when the bed is used, for the said parts to spread or spring and thereby loosen the joints and allow the slats to fall from their support. By the use of my improved device this difficulty is remedied,

and the side boards are kept perpendicular and square with the foot and head boards.

In operating my device the nut G of the central clamp is turned, which exerts an equal and simultaneous tension on the rods E through the rods G and the coupling-plates F, thereby drawing longitudinally and transversely upon the bed, and the tension thus exerted may be increased at will to render the bed perfectly rigid. A distortion or unequal strain is thus avoided and the parts sustained and braced against dissembling.

The device, being readily applied, is adapted for use on both old and new bedsteads, to which it may be attached in a very short time.

The readiness with which this device may be detached from a bedstead will also be appreciated. Instead of being obliged to withdraw screws or screw-eyes, it is simply necessary to raise the hooks on the ends of the tension-rods outlof engagement with the apertured ears on the. brackets D.

It will be understood that the clamp can either be turned by hand or by a piece of iron or wood inserted between the parallel bars or by a wrench which may be caused to grasp one of the parallel bars. Furthermore, the detachability of the entire device is an important feature. By merely loosening the clamp the rods E may be unhooked from the castings D and the entire frame-work separated, leaving the castings D still in position on the bed.

Having thus described my invention, I claim- As an improvement in bedsteads, the combinatiomwith the head and foot boards and the side rails, of the castings D, secured to the same, and having the perforated lugs d, the diamond-shaped coupling-plates F, the rods E, secured to said plates in the angles thereof and radiating therefrom and having hooks e at their ends, which engage the lugs 11, the

rods G, secured to the coupling-plates and extending toward each other, and provided with screw-threads at their inner ends, and the clamp G, consisting of the nuts g 9 fitted on 5 the screw-threaded ends of the rods G, and the parallel bars 9' 9, connecting the nuts 9, substantially as set forth.
