SIIHIN 3 DECORATIVE CONTAINER This invention relates to a decorative paperboard container of the type that has an outer decorative overwrap usually of a glossy material and a removable circumferentially extending band usually of a glossy material.
Containers of'this general type are known and described in U.S. Pat. Nos. 2,950,040 and 3,451,611. They are extensively used in the packaging of spirituous liquors. In use, they are sold by a retailer with the circumferentially extending band in place. It carries product identifying trade mark and/or other reading matter. The package is usually purchased by the original purchaser as a gift and, in use, he removes the band before presenting the gift. Removal of the band leaves an attractive gift container with no advertising or reading matter on it.
The securement of the removable band has always been a problem in the manufacture of these containers. It cannot be easily secured to the outer decorative overwrap because the overwrap and'band are usually of a glossy nature and cannot be adhered together with readily available adhesives in a manner that will not mar the surface of the decorative overwrap when the band is removed.
Previous constructions that have been popular have turned-in corner flaps which have been free of overwrap and which have served as anchor flaps to which the ends of the band are adhesively secured. These constructions are cumbersome and lack neatness at the inside comer where the anchor flaps are located. Good appearance and neatness are of prime importance in a gift wrap package and it is an object of this invention to provide a neat package which avoids the cumbersome corner constructions of the prior art and which has a removable band over a decorative overwrap.
With these and other objects in view, a container blank according to this invention comprises a paperboard blank having a series of side panels, a top wall and a bottom wall, said series of side panels being hinged together at fold lines, a glue flap hinged to said first side panel of said series of side panels, said first side panel being at one end of said series of side panels, a second side panel of said series of side panels having an adhesive receiving strip or area adjacent the marginal portions of the free edge thereof, said second side panel being at the other end of said series of side panels to said first side panel, a decorative overwrap laminated to said paperboard blank, said overwrap having a marginal edge terminating at said adhesive strip, a band extending across said seriesof side panels, said band having the marginal portion of its first end adhesively secured to said adhesive strip and the marginal portion of its second end adhesively secured to said glue flap.

Referring to the drawings, the container blank illustrated in FIG. 1 is made of hard paperboard and consists of a plurality of hinged panels and walls. The side of the container is formed from a series of side panels l0, 12, 14 and 16. First side panel 10 has a glue flap 18 hinged thereto which in use is adhesively secured to the adhesive strip 20 of a second side panel 16 to form the tubular characteristic of the container when it is in a set-up position. The top and bottom walls are formed by fold over flaps 22, 24, 26 and 28 As indicated above, the container of this invention is a container that has a decorative overwrap and which also has a removable band. The overwrap 30 includes a base sheet 30a of paper that will readily accept adhesive laminated to a glossy fibre decorative overlay 30b. In use, the band carries advertising or like material and is desirable at point of sale. However, it is not desirable if the item is to be presented as a gift and the object of the invention is to provide a container of improved construction of the type where the band can be easily removed after sale in order to realise the full potential of the gift wrap.
The gift base sheet side of the laminated wrap is glued to the paperboard blank as illustrated. It will be noted that one marginal edge of the decorative overwrap 30 terminates as at 32 at the adhesive strip or area 20'. In use, the underside of the glue flap 18 is adhesively secured to the adhesivestrip or area 20. The fibre surface nature of the decorative overwrap is usually of a nature that will not readily accept glue so that the edge 32 of the decorative overwrap must stop short of the glue strip 20 in order to permit a good adhesive bond between the glue strip and the glue flap.
It will also be noted that the opposite marginal edge of the decorative overwrap overhangs, toa small degree, the edge of glue flap 18 as at 34. When the container is in set-up position as illustrated in FIG. 3, this free edge of decorative overwrap overlays the decorative overwrap on the side panel 16 and presents a neat hand wrapped appearance of the overwrap. This is quite a desirable feature from an asthetic point of view because it avoids the suggestion of a machine wrapped package.

One end of the band 36 is adhesively secured to the adhesive strip or area 20 as at 38. The other end of the band 36 is lightly adhesively tacked to the glue flap 18' by means of adhesive tacks as at 40. These adhesive tacks are small tacking spots and do not have a great deal of adhesive strength. They are not of sufficient strength to hold the band in place in use and they are used only to secure the band in location while it is in its knocked down and flat condition.
It will be noted that the marginal end portion 37 of the band 36 overhangs the edge of the facile 30 so that when the container is set-up into tubular form by gluing the glue flap 18 to the glue strip 20, the overhanging portion 37 of the band 36 overlays the opposite end of the band and can be adhesively secured thereto to form a strong adhesive bond for the band. There is no difficulty in adhesively securing cellophane to cellophane.
The container is preferably shipped to the user in flat knock-down condition and set up into tubular form at the place of use by the user on a standard gluing machine.
To set the container up it is, glued at the glue strip 20 and at the overhanging portion of the band 36 and the end flaps are folded and glued to form end walls. The container presents a very handsome and neat appearance. The free edge 34 of the facile sits flatly against the facile of the side wall 16 and the band 36 is securely located in place but capable of easy intentional removal by a user.
In use, a purchaser purchases the container full of product with the band 36 secured thereto. If the purchaser desires to give the item as a gift, he merely rips the band 36 from the container. In this respect, the only strong securement of the band to the container is at the glue flap 20 so that the band can be removed by tearing at this place without any evidence of a broken surface. The small tacks 40 for the cellophane break easily and are insignificant.
FIG. illustrates an alternative manner for securing the second free end of the cellophane band 36. In this case, the glue flap 18 has an anchor flap for the free end of the cellophane or like strip 36. The anchor flap 42 is adapted to fold under the glue flap 18 in use.
The anchor flap 42 does not have a decorative overwrap on its surface so that it forms a good adhesive surface for the cellophane strip. In manufacture, the free ends of the cellophane strip are adhesively secured to the glue strip 20 and the glue flap 42 when the blank tainer of FIGS. 4 to 6 is the same as the container of FIGS. 1 to 3.
In use, the container can be shipped in flat form or in tubular form. If shipped in flat form, it is first formed into a tube by means of appropriate gluing and folding operations wherein flap 42 is turned to underlie flap 18 and then glued to the glue receiving strip or area 20.
Embodiments of the invention other than the one illustrated will be apparent to those skilled in the art.
I claim:
1. A container blank comprising a paperboard blank having inner and outer surfaces and having a series of side panels, a top wall and a bottom wall,
said series of side panels being hinged together at fold lines,
a glue flap having an adhesive receiving area on its inner surface and being hinged to a first side panel of said series of side panels, said first side panel being at one end of said series of side panels,
a decorative overwrap laminated to said outer surface of said paper board blank and covering said glue flap,
a second side panel at the other end of said series of side panels and having an adhesive receiving area on its outer surface extending from an intermediate area of the second panel to the marginal free edge thereof which edge is located at the end of said series of side panels opposite to said first side panel,
said overwrap having a marginal edge terminating at said adhesive area of the second panel but spaced from the marginal free edge thereof,
a band extending across said overwrap and said series of side panels,
said band having marginal portions of its first end adhesively secured to said adhesive area of the second panel and having marginal portions of its second end adhesively secured to said overwrap at said glue flap.
2. A container blank as claimed in claim 1 in which said marginal portions of said second end of said band are spot tacked to said decorative overwrap.
3. A container blank as claimed in claim 1 in which marginal portions of said decorative overwrap overhangs the edge of said glue flap.
4. A container blank as claimed in claim 1 having an anchor flap hinged to said glue flap,
the marginal portion of said second end of said band being adhesively secured to said anchor flap.

Claims (4)

1. A container blank comprising a paperboard blank having inner and outer surfaces and having a series of side panels, a top wall and a bottom wall, said series of side panels being hinged together at fold lines, a glue flap having an adhesive receiving area on its inner surface and being hinged to a first side panel of said series of side panels, said first side panel being at one end of said series of side panels, a decorative overwrap laminated to said outer surface of said paper board blank and covering said glue flap, a second siDe panel at the other end of said series of side panels and having an adhesive receiving area on its outer surface extending from an intermediate area of the second panel to the marginal free edge thereof which edge is located at the end of said series of side panels opposite to said first side panel, said overwrap having a marginal edge terminating at said adhesive area of the second panel but spaced from the marginal free edge thereof, a band extending across said overwrap and said series of side panels, said band having marginal portions of its first end adhesively secured to said adhesive area of the second panel and having marginal portions of its second end adhesively secured to said overwrap at said glue flap.
2. A container blank as claimed in claim 1 in which said marginal portions of said second end of said band are spot tacked to said decorative overwrap.
3. A container blank as claimed in claim 1 in which marginal portions of said decorative overwrap overhangs the edge of said glue flap.
4. A container blank as claimed in claim 1 having an anchor flap hinged to said glue flap, the marginal portion of said second end of said band being adhesively secured to said anchor flap.
