UNITED STATES PATENTS 1 Clalm, 3 Drawlng lFlgures 142,418 9/1873 Taylor 312/235 R COMBINATION OFFICE FURNITURE SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to a combination desk, bookshelf, and ottoman.
The advantage of this invention is that while sitting in an adjacent chair, the user has the use of a combination desk, bookshelf, and ottoman within his reach. The user can use the desk, refer to a book in the bookshelf, and read the book with his feet on the ottoman, all without leaving his chair.
The invention comprises an ottoman of adjustable height which has a vertical bookshelf attached at one end. The shelf is in a casing that provides room for the users feet to rest on the ottoman below the book shelf. A concealed desk top is mounted as the vertical cover of the book shelf, and serves as a desk top when rotated to a horizontal position about its hinges.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS The objects and features of the invention may be understood with reference to the following detailed description of an illustrative embodiment of the invention, taken together with the accompanying drawings in which:
FIG. I is a side view of the device;
FIG. 2 is a fragmentary back view of the device showing the desk section; and
FIG. 3 is a fragmentary front view of the device showing the ottoman, foot area, bookshelf.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Turning now descriptively to the drawings, in which similar reference characters denote similar elements throughout the several views, FIG. 1 illustrates the compact office furniture unit 10. The device incorporates an ottomoan 12 that is adjustable in height, as are the desk 14 and bookshelf 16 which are attached to the rear of the ottoman 12. A conventional combined ballbearing collar 18, with thumbscrew adjustment 3] is fitted, to provide the height adjustment of the ottoman, on telescoping shafts 20 and 22 fastened respectively to the ottoman l2 and the base 35.
As shown in FIG. 3, the bookcase 24 is attached to the rear of the ottoman l2 and incorporates a bookshelf 16. The space below the bookshelf 16 is available as an area for the location of the feet of the user when rested on ottoman 12.
As shown in FIG. 2, a rotatable shelf leaf 14 is mounted to the rear of the bookcase section by hidden hinges 33. Shelf leaf 14 serves as a desk top when to tated into the horizontal position as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 and may be rotated to the vertical position to form the rear side of the bookcase 24, when not in use. In the vertical position of the shelf-leaf 14, the leaf 14 rests against fixed stops 28.
Since obvious changes may be made in the specific embodiment of the invention described herein, such modifications being within the spirit and scope of the invention claimed, it is indicated that all matter contained herein is intended as illustrative and not as limiting in scope.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
l. A footrest fitted with a bookshelf and a folding desk, comprising a fixed base adaptable for mounting on a floor,
a foot rest section,
telescopic means rotatably joining the footrest section to the fixed base,
a bookshelf and desk unit mounted to the rear of the footrest section, said unit being formed of two side members supporting, at .each end, a bookshelf that lies above the footrest section; and a back member, joining the two side members, fitted with a hinged section that may be folded into the horizontal plane in the installed position,
said bookshelf being open facing the forward section of the footrest,
so that a person seated on an adjoining chair may rest his feet on the footrest section. under the bookshelf of the device while facing the bookshelf, or alternately may rotate the bookshelf and desk unit so that he is seated facing the desk section of the de-
