Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. DEGGES, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OFOOLUMBIA.
IMPROVED P ROPELLER.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent N0. 38,292, dated April 28, l8b3.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known Jthat 1, WLLLIAM H. DEGGEs, of the city of Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented a certain new and and useful Improvement on Propellers; 4and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and marks thereon.
My improvement is more particularly designed for use in vessels with recessed sides throughout their entire length, though it may be employed in any kind ot' vessel.
As is shown by the drawings forming part of this specification-whereof Figure 1 is a side view of a propeller made under my improvement, and Fig. 2 a transverse section of the same-my invention relates to certain pecn liarities in forming the screw of the propeller. It will be seen that from the hub a two plates, b b, extend outward, the plates being in close contact with each other until near their termination, where, by being turned a ay from each other, they form a space, c, the inner surfaces of these plates forming two of the walls of the space, while a cap, d, forms the third wall and constitutes the cover of the space. This cap d, with the turned ends of the plates, projects on each side, so that in the revolution of the propeller the inner surface thereof acts upon the water and prevents the slip that otherwise would be likely to occur. The cap and plates extending on both sides allow the propeller to be as efcient when turned in the one direction as in the other, and hence this propeller is especially valuable in all vessels so constructed, with both ends like bows, as to have equal facilities for moving in either direction without turning the vessel.
The propeller shown by the drawings is of two threads of a screw, but, as is evident, any other number of threads may be used in constructing propellers under my improvement, that may be deemed preferable.
As is also evident, propellers constructed under my improvement can be made of any material and in any way under which and by which other propellers can be made, and whenever it is desirable to render the propeller buoyant to a considerable extent the ordinary means for so doing applicable to propellers generally may be adapted to mine.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, as an improvement on screw-propellers, is-
Forming the blades or threads of the screw of the two plates b b and the cap d, as and for the purposes herein set forth.
This specification signed this 1st day of April, 1863.
W. H. DEGGES.
