UNITED STATES ROBERT SHILOAH summer,
-OF GALESBURG, ILLINOIS.
VAPQRIZER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 382,835, datedMay 15,1888.
Application filed January 23, 1888.
Serial No. 261,574. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ROBERT SHILOAH SHEE- LEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Galesburg, in the county of Knox and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for the Treatment of Oatarrh, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in apparatus for. administering remedies for catarrh and diseases of the throat and lungs and it'consists in certain novel features, hereinafter described and claimed. I
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved apparatus for administering the catarrh remedy. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan View of the same. Fig. 4 is a detail view of t-he'sheet-metal tongue.
The construction of my improved apparatus is as follows: A strip of sheet metal of suitable length and width is bent in the form of a cylinder, A, and the ends thereof. are united by means of pins, wires, rivets, or other devices, B, care being taken to employ no solder for this purpose. In the cylinder A thus formed are made a series of horizontal elongated openings, O, which series of openings extend entirely around the perimeter of the cylinder at about the center thereof, and at a slight distance above the openings 0 is a second series of openings, D, which are smaller than said openings G.
E represents a circular diaphragm, which is made of sheet metal, and is secured in the upper end of cylinder A, just above the openings D, the said diaphragm forming the bottom of a pan, F, in the upper end of the cylinder.
G represents a circular perforated plate or diaphragm, which is also made of sheet metal; is arranged in the cylinder at a point on thelevel with the lower sides of the openings 0, and is provided at its perimeter with a series of downturned lugs or ears, H, which bear against the inner side'of the cylinder, and are secured thereto by means of pins or rivets, as shown. This plate or diaphragm G is provided with openings of suitable sizes, which may be either arranged as shown in Fig. 3, or
arranged to. form any other fanciful design or configuration that may be preferred, the object of the said openings being to permit the products of" combustion from an ordinary lamp to pass up from the chimney thereof when my device is arranged on the top of the chimney by supporting the plate G. thereon, as represented in Fig. 2. The products of combustion and the caloric currents from the lamp pass from the chimney through the openings in the plate or diaphragm G and strike against the bottom of pan F, and are then deflected outward through-the openings 0 D. Thelatter are of sufficient size to admit the insertion of a sheet-metal tongue or holder, K, such as represented in Fig. 4, and the function of which is to enable the device to be removed from the top of the lamp-chimney. In order to prevent the said tongue or holder from 1y ing flat on the table or other object when the same is not in use, I provide its outer end with a series of open slits and bends, the ears or lugs L being thus formed in'opposite directions, as shown, so that no matter which side of the tongue or holder is uppermost when the same is placed on the table the lugs or cars will serve to. support the same in an incline posi tion, thereby enabling it to be readily grasped. When administering the catarrh compound by heating the same in my improved heating 8o device, care must be exercised that the flame of the lamp burns clearly and without smoke or soot, as otherwise carbon will be inhaled by the patient when inhaling the fumes of the catarrh remedy.
Having thus described. my invention, I claimr '1. The vessel for heating and administering the catarrh remedy, said vessel comprising the cylinder having the pan F in its upper end, 0 the perforated plate or diaphragm G below the said pan and adapted to rest upon the upper end of alampchimney, thatportion of the cylinder between the bottom of -the pan and the plate or diaphragm G being perforated to admit the escape of the products of combustion, substantially as described.v I
2. The device for administering catarrh remedy, comprising the cylinder having the openings 0 D, the diaphragm E, arranged. in reo the upper end of the cylinder abov ings D,and the plate or diaphragm 5 purpose set forth, and having the e the open In testimony that I claim the foregoing as G,arranged my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
ROBERT SHILOAH SHEELEY. Witnesses:
lugs or ears secured to the cylinder, substantially as dei EDWARD 0. 801m, scribed.
JOSIAH GALE.
