Abstract
Since current trends in crime against property have made additional and improved means necessary for reinforcing security of boxcar doors to prevent theft and pilferage, a deterrent spring clip attached to the door prevents door from being opened surreptitiously or forcibly, except by the use of a special tool available only to authorized personnel. A tool for the removal of the deterrent spring clip is disclosed which will readily fit around engaged clip and which can be manipulated manually to distort clip and remove it so that door will be free to be opened.

A tool for the removal of the deterrent spring clip is disclosed which will readily fit around engaged clip and which can be manipulated manually to distort clip and remove it so that door will be free to be opened. 5 Claims, 3 Drawing Figures 1 TOOL FOR REMOVAL OF DETERRENI SPRING CLIP ' FIELD OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to tools, and particularly to special tools, and, more particularly; to a special tool for the removal of deterrent spring clips which seal boxcar sliding doors.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PRIOR ART In copending application, Ser. No. 236,803 filed concurrently herewith, there is disclosed a deterrent spring 7 clip adapted to be fastened to the vertical door jamb of a railroad car in orderto lock the sliding door in a closed position. This clip is specifically formed to surround the channel structure of conventional door jambs and provides a latching means that engages with the leading edge of the sliding door.
Since the deterrent spring clip is designed to afford maximum security, it cannot be removed by the use of anyexisting tool or tools, but requires a special tool which will readily remove it to permit opening of door.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION I It is the general object of this invention to provide a tool which can engage deterrent'spring clips of the type disclosed in the above mentioned patent application and remove same so that sealed doors can be opened.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring now specifically to the drawings, there is shown in FIG. 1, the deterrent spring clip designated by the numeral 1 engaged to closing side, in part, of door frame 2. Referring to FIG. 2, lever arm 11 is partly compressed towardstationary member 12 of the tool, retracting movable member 9 which'stresses anchor side 8 to its fracture point.
Referring to FIG. 3, lever arm 11 is totally compressed toward stationary side 12 of the tool, and an-. chor side 8 has fractured completely, thus releasing hold on door frame 2, permitting the door to be opened.
The foregoing is a description of just one illustrative embodiment of my present invention. It should be appreciated that the present concepts of my invention may be incorporated in other systems by varying the details of construction. Therefore the following claims should be interpreted in a'manner consistent with the spirit and scope of the invention.
l. A tool for fracturing a clip having at least a pair of substantially perpendicular sides, comprising a stationary member with a fixed jaw projecting substantially perpendicularly from an intermediate portion thereof; a gripping jaw mounted at one end of said stationary member for translation alonga path substantially parallel to the projection of said fixed jaw; said gripping jaw, stationary member and'fixed jaw forming an aperture surrounding said clip; an extension on said gripping jaw, projecting into said aperture; and a lever member coupled to said gripping jaw and said stationary member to move the extension on said gripping jaw towards said stationary member with a mechanical advantage; wherein said gripping jaw extends through a channel in said stationary member and is constrained to move in saidpath only.
2. A tool forfracturing a clip as defined in claim 1, wherein said lever member is directly coupled at one end to said gripping jaw, and pivoted to said stationary member at'a position adjacent to the aperture defined by said gripping jaw, stationary member, and fixed jaw.
3. A tool for fracturing a clip as defined in claim 1, wherein said lever member is directly coupled at one end to the end of said gripping jaw on the remote side of said stationary member from said fixed jaw, and pivoted to said stationary member at a position on said remote side.
4. A tool-for fracturing a clip as defined in claim 3, wherein the point for pivoting between said lever member and said stationary member is between said gripping jaw and said fixed jaw.
5. A tool for fracturing a clip as defined in claim 4, wherein said lever'member is bent at said point of pivoting to extend away from said stationary member at a slight angle.

Claims (5)
1. A tool for fracturing a clip having at least a pair of substantially perpendicular sides, comprising a stationary member with a fixed jaw projecting substantially perpendicularly from an intermediate portion thereof; a gripping jaw mounted at one end of said stationary member for translation along a path substantially parallel to the projection of said fixed jaw; said gripping jaw, stationary member and fixed jaw forming an aperture surrounding said clip; an extension on said gripping jaw, projecting into said aperture; and a lever member coupled to said gripping jaw and said stationary member to move the extension on said gripping jaw towards said stationary member with a mechanical advantage; wherein said gripping jaw extends through a channel in said stationary member and is constrained to move in said path only.
2. A tool for fracturing a clip as defined in claim 1, wherein said lever member is directly coupled at one end to said gripping jaw, and pivoted to said stationary member at a position adjacent to the aperture defined by said gripping jaw, stationary member, and fixed jaw.
3. A tool for fracturing a clip as defined in claim 1, wherein said lever member is directly coupled at one end to the end of said gripping jaw on the remote side of said stationary member from said fixed jaw, and pivoted to said stationary member at a position on said remote side.
4. A tool for fracturing a clip as defined in claim 3, wherein the point for pivoting between said lever member and said stationary member is between said gripping jaw and said fixed jaw.
5. A tool for fracturing a clip as defined in claim 4, wherein said lever member is bent at said point of pivoting to extend away from said stationary member at a slight angle.
