U NITEn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT J. QIGLEY, OF TORONTO, ONTARIO, CAADA.
WATCH-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of LettersPatent No. 382.190fated lMay 1, 1888.
Application tiled October 27, 1887. Serial No. 253.568.
To aZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT JOHN QUIGLEY, of the city of Toronto, in the county of York, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, manufacturer, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Watch'Oases, of which the `following is a specification.
The object of the invention is, first, to provide a watchcase in which the metal forming it shall be so distributed as to strengthen the shape of the case and make it practically noncompressible, and secondly, to form thejointbetween the center and the bezel or back so that it may be iinished in a lathe after the pendant has been soldered in position; and it consists in forming on the back or bezel a ring designed to tit into a recess formed in the center, as hereinafter more particularly eX- plained.
Figure l is an enlarged cross-section of a watch-case `with theback snapped in and bezel screwed in. Fig. 2 is a similar view with bezel and center solid and back screwed in. Fig. 3 is a crosssection of a watch center, back, and bezel made in accordance with my inven tion.
In the drawings, A is the center, which, as shown, is wider than the base of the pendant B.
Ais the movement-ring iitted into the center and abutting at one edge against the shoulder a,forined on said center, as shown, the said center being suflciently wide to receive said movementering and yet leave room for the back and bezel. The back has a shoulder, d', abutting against the movement-ring and serving to hold the same in place.
O is the bezel, and D the back ofthe watchcase, which latter may either be made solid with the center A or secured thereto in the same manner as the bezel O. This bezel has formed on it a projecting ring, a, designed to screw or snap into a recess formed in the center A. The edge of the ring a, when tted into the recess, butts against a step, b, formed at the bottom of the recess, or the edge of the center A butts against the flange d, formed on the bezel O, on which liange I prefer to make a knurl.
From this description it will be seen that the joints will not only be dust-proof, but that they may be nished in a lathe after the pendant B has been solderedin position. The case is also much stronger, being braced by the screw or snap at the point -where it is most (No model.)
likely to dent, all extra stock required for the snaps or screws being located at that part of the case where the principal wear falls. The center being wide, as shown, the dome of the back may be greatly lessened, and is therefore much stronger.
As the ring aon the bezel or back screws or snaps into the center, the joint thus formed cannot possibly spread, as it does when the back or bezel snaps or screws over the edge of the center.
It will further be seen that by making the joint at the point shown the back of the case is so greatly strengthened at a point where the strain is directed that it is' practically impossible to compress the back and injure the movement. This latter point is of great importance, and is applicable to watchesin which the snap or screw tits on the outside of the center, as it is by extending the center above the movement-plate that this strength is se cured, the joint-ring being located above the movement-plate so as to form a strengtheningring for the case.
What I claim as my invention isl. A watch-case center made wider than the base of its pendant, in combination with a movementring tted in said center, and a bezel or back having a ring formed on itdesigned to fit into a recess made in the center, and a shoulder, d, abutting against said movement-ring, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, witha watch-case center, A, and a movement-ring, A', tted in said center, ol' a back or bezel having a ring, a, formed on it to fit into a recess formed in the center A, and a iange, d, to butt against the edge of the center A, and a shoulder, d', abutting against said movementring, substantially as and for the purpose specified. n
3. The combination, with the watchcase center A, formed with interior recess and shoulder a', of the movement-ring fitted in the recess in said center and abutting against said shoulder, and a back having a shoulder, d', abutting against the edge of the movementring, and a flange, d, abutting against the outer edge of the center, substantially as shown and described.
Toronto, October 5, 1887.
v ROBERT J. QUIGLEY.
