Abstract
A roof vent for an industrial structure or the like which comprises an elongated opening formed in the roof and overlain by a butterfly covering defining a pair of lateral openings. At horizontally spaced locations along each of the openings, there are provided horizontal channels of cantilever mounting in which respective carriages are received, rectangular screen depending from the carriages are movable thereon toward and away from the aforementioned openings. The horizontal supports carrying each screen are surmounted by a plurality of horizontally spaced parallel vertical panels affording protection against rain.

sum 2 or 5 F/GZ SKYLIGHT TURRET WITH MOVABLE SCREEN FORINDUSTRIAL HALLS FIELD OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to a turret with a movable screen me'ant for those industrial halls where considerable heat release occurs,.the turret both closing the top openings and protecting the system from the wind.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION It is a current practice with industrial halls that the heat released by ovens and equipment, or resulting from various technological processes, is exhausted by means of installations provided with openings both at the bottom and at the top of the hall, for handling fresh and/or hot air.
This is achieved with the aid of mobile windows for introducing fresh air at the bottom of the hall and a skylight turret with mobile windows or with dampers, for discharging hot air at the upper part of the hall.
It is well known that wind action, in the case of halls with natural ventilation, has a beneficial effect as far as the lower openings are concerned, as it aids fresh air introduction, but it has an adverse effect as regards the upper openings in that it reduces the area available for hot air dischargeand requires increase of this area.
In order to eliminate this effect, which results in oversizing the heights of the hall and of the-skylight turret, it has been the practice to use turrets provided with fixed wind protection screens mounted in front of the discharge openings at pre-set distances.
For all the above types of turrets, the main elements are the fixed screens for protection from the wind and the mobile windows or panes controlling the quantity of air to be exhausted depending on external, temperature. These members decrease the free exhaust flow cross section and impose an additional resistance in the path of the air giving rise to the necessity of increasing the height of the hall in order to obtain the necessary draft pressure.
DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING The invention is described below with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:

SPECIFIC DESCRIPTION The movable screen turret according to this invention is mounted on the roof of industrial halls and is used for discharging the heat generated by heat sources or by various technological processes. The butterfly type turret is composed of pairs of girders 1 equally spaced along the whole length of the vertical median plane of the hall and 2 mounted by small posts supported in turn on the top booms of trusses composing the strength frame of the hall. The turret is also provided with longitudinal girders 4 which interconnect the girders l of the turret, and support a roof 5 of reinforced concrete or asbestos cement slabs. So that air channels may be formed, a frame is cantilevered on the small posts 2 and is formed of U-shaped upper horizontal girders 6 supported, at their opposite end, on posts 7 bottom horizontal girders 8 extended to carry a work platform 9 and diagonal braces 10.
In this structural arrangement, the short upright posts 2 supporting the turret girders 1, together with the frame formed by the girders 6 and 8 and the posts 7 define along the whole length of the hall on either side of the longitudinal centerline, the channelsA serving to vent air from the interior of the hall.
Movable rectangular screens (FIGS. 3-5) made of a metal frame 11, with pillars l2 and bracings 13 roll along the U-shaped channels 6. I
The metal frame 1 l is closed by sheet metal or asbestos cement plates 14 and provided, at its upper part, at either end with a roller train which rolls on U-shaped sections 6.
The dimensions of the movable screen are selected so as to ensure obturation of the openings between the small posts 2 of the butterfly turret, on either side and along its whole length. The movable screens are fixed, in the closed or open position, to the posts 2, 7 of the channel with the aid of metal fixing rings 16, disposed on the pillars 12 of the screen. v
At the top surface of U-shaped sections 6, three to five blades 17, 19 for protection against rain are fixed on either side of the turret, being disposed parallel to one another along the whole length of the turret. The
rain-protection blades are composed of a rectangular metal frame 17 provided with bracings l8 and closed by sheet metal or asbestos cement panels 19.
The control of the movable screens, according to the season, is achieved by hand, from the longitudinal access platforms 9, or mechanically with the aid of cables 20, guided on a roller system 21, and in this case actuation is perfonned from the floor with the aid of a drum 22 upon which the cables 20 are wound or unwound.
We claim:
1. The combination of an elongated structure with a roof vent comprising a turret surmounting said structure and opening laterally thereof at generally rectangular vertical openings, said turret having upwardly and outwardly inclined roof portions; horizontally spaced uprights extending between said roof portions and said structure, horizontally extending supports cantilevered on said turret and projecting laterally from said openings; respective carriages mounted on said supports and horizontally shiftable thereon toward and away from said openings; and respective screens lying generally in while defining vertically extending airshafts of a horisaid supports of each screen being formed as mutually open U-section channels.
3. The combination defined 'in claim 2 further comprising a plurality of horizontally spaced vertically extending blades spanning each pair of supports, each of said blades comprising a rectangular frame provided with diagonal bracing and covered by panels.
Claims (3)
1. The combination of an elongated structure with a roof vent comprising a turret surmounting said structure and opening laterally thereof at generally rectangular vertical openings, said turret having upwardly and outwardly inclined roof portions; horizontally spaced uprights extending between said roof portions and said structure, horizontally extending supports cantilevered on said turret and projecting laterally from said openings; respective carriages mounted on said supports and horizontally shiftable thereon toward and away from said openings; and respective screens lying generally in vertical planes and depending from the carriages of the supports at each of said openings and shiftable along said supports toward and away from said openings while defining vertically extending airshafts of a horizontal width determined by the distances of each screen from the respective openings.
2. The combination defined in claim 1 wherein said turret is formed by a plurality of horizontally spaced outwardly and upwardly extending girders, said uprights being fixed to said girders and being provided with a generally rectangular frame lying in a vertical plane transverse to said openings and having a respective support foRming an upper member of the frame, said supports of each screen being formed as mutually open U-section channels.
3. The combination defined in claim 2 further comprising a plurality of horizontally spaced vertically extending blades spanning each pair of supports, each of said blades comprising a rectangular frame provided with diagonal bracing and covered by panels.
