Be it known that I,-DWIGHT G.CLA1 P, a
citizen of the United States, and resident of Owosso, in thecounty of Shiawassee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bureaus; and I do ,hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and ,exact description of the invention,
which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in whiche- Figure l is an inside view of one end piece of my improved bureau. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the entire bureau. Fig. 3
yis an inside View of theend piece having the Vplain drawerguides; and Fig, 4 isa view of the end of the drawer, showing the spring.
The same numeralsof reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.' i
My invention has relation to bureaus, wash stands, wardrobes; desks, and other articles of .furniture provided with sliding drawers; and it contemplatescertainimprovements upon the bureau for which application-for Letters Patent, Serial No. 251,934, was filed inv the United States Patent Office on the 10th day of October,1887,which said improvements will be hereinaftermore ,fully set forth. In the accompanying drawings, the numerall indicates the end panel. 2 and'` 3 are the front and rear stiles, respectively. 4 is the yrear panel, and 5 indicates the mortises or holes for the reception of the endsof the front cross-pieces.
' 'lhe upper and lower guides, 6 and 7, are
similar to the guides shown and described in` the above-mentioned application, and the up ingly-shaped recesses 10 and 11- in the front.
and rear stiles, the guides being supported by their dovetailed ends iu 'the recesses insteadv l of in the grooves shownand described in the `ditioris of the weather.
former application. having the y*guides supported in this manner they serve'to draw and hold the stiles together while/being'v sup-y ported by them, so th'at'the endpiecesofthe 5 5'" lbureau will beheld rigidly together, the Stiles l clamping the panels, removing all danger 'of the bureaus being damaged or warping lby the Iexpansion or contraction ofthe wood inthe several parts of the end pieces under thein- 6o fluence of changing temperature orother conlThe drawers of my improved*bureau,j&c'.,

adapted to bear against the fixed, guide orside of the bureau when the middlejpart of the bulged spring is pressed inward.y It is obvi-,v ous that this spring may bef employedeither 7 5 ou one or both sides V,of the drawer,. andgthat" it will operateV to keep the drawer f'rni'iriits: place, while at thesalne time it will' admit -of shrinking or warping of thesu'rrounding parts of the `bureau without binding or clamping /thedrawer, so as tov makeait difficult to` open or close/the same. f 1 By having the end ofthe bulgedlspring formed with the bent liptwopoints of contact' `will be formed betweenthe draWer-g'uideand v8 5 o the spring, the bulged middle of the spring and the lip bearing against the same.
