Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JULIUS A. PEASE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT lN CAOUTCHOUC SHIRT-COLLARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 38,122, dated April 7, 1863.
lo all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUs A. PEAsE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Im proved Shirt-Collar for the Neck; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being h 1d to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in making a shirt-collar for the neck, of india-rubber or other material impervious to water, and tlat can be taken off from the shirt, and with a sponge or cloth washed, wiped, and puton again immediately, ready for use, and when bent resumes its original position.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I construct my collar of any desired shape and color, and of any material that is impervious to water. VI make it of white rubber, cut from the sheet, or enamel it after it is cut, or I make it by covering the rubber collar with enameled cloth or leather, or other material made impervious to water. I use the rubber to obtain the spring, so that when the collar is bent or forced out of position it will rtlfsume its position when the pressure is taken o Figure l is a perspective view of the collar. Fig. 2 is a sectional view showing the rubber B covered with enameled cloth c c.
It will be seen that one shirtcollar is all that a man wants at a time, as he can take 0E the collar and wash it, wipe, and put it on again immediately.
I am aware that garments of water-proof and elastic materials have been made and worn, and that many of them have collars of various forms sewed to and forming part of them. These I do not claim, my invent-ion having relation only to the article well known in com merce by all its characteristics as a shirtcol ltr, made attachable by means of buttons, eyelets, tapes, studs, or the equivalents thereof therefore Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- Y A shirt-collar made of rubber, and that will resume its position when bent or forced out of place, substantially as before and for the purpose described.
