Description

UN TED *STATE-s.`l
PATENT OE-FICE@ i EUROPE N. oOLLE'rr,r OE wHELENisPRiNGs, ARKANSAS.
REvERslN'G-'GEAR FoR/sAw-Mltt.
` SPECIFICATION 'forming part of Le'tters'Patkent N o. 381,215, dated Aprill'l, 1888.?"-
applicationA filed January 13, isss. sriai'Nassojs. (Nq model.) 4
' .To all whom it may concern.-
Be it knownA that I, EUROPE N. COLLET'nof Whelen Springs,"in the county of yClark and corresponding parts in all the figures.
State ot' Arkansas, have invented a new and ImprovedA Reversing-Gear for Saw-Mills, of whichl the following'is a full, clear, and exact description. i
The objectof the invention is to provide a new and improved reversinglgear especially adapted for saw-mills, to imparta forward and backward motion to the saw-mill carriage, and which is very simple and durable inv construction and effective in operation.
The inventionconsistsof parts and details` andcombinations ofthe same, as .will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out-in the claims.
Reference is ,to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate Figure lis a plan View of the improvement'. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the saine, and Fig.
3 is lan enlarged sectional end elevation ofpart of the improvement onfthe line x x of Fig. l.y The improvement is mounted on a suitablyconstructed frame, A, on which is mounted to rotate the rack-shaft B, connected in the usual manner with the saw-mill carriage, which is on its bearings.
intended to be moved forward and backward On the rack-shaft B, within the frame A, are secured the wheels C and C',
' and on each side ofthe said shaft are placed the shafts D and E, carrying the pulleys F and F', respectively, connected by belts with suitable machinery'for imparting a rotary motion to the said shafts D vand E in the direction of the arrows a and b',`asindicated in Fig. 2. The shafts D and E carry the paper pulleys G 'G' and 'H H', respectively, and the said sets of f pulleys G G and H Hareadapted to'eugage' alternately the sides of the wheels Cand C', so that when one set is in Contact with the said wheels C C' the other set is out of contact, and vice versa. f
The shaft D is mounted to rotate'in the bearings I I', held loosely on the top of the frame A, and the shaft E is mounted to rotate in similar bearings, J J', falso held on top of theframe A. Bearings I J- and I J are connected with -H, as shown in Fig.f1.
"the manner above stated. Whenitis desired to `wherebythe bearings J J'r and I I- are; moved l "7J 'Pulleys H and H' are thrown in contact with` i the wheels C and C', while the paper pulleysy and thereby impartl a rotary motionto the said each-other' by straightmetallicbarsKKand K'K, respectively, so as to move the shaftsD y and VE parallel withfeachother and smultane- I ously. To the Outer ends ofthe bearings .I and J' are `secured the rods L, rigidlyconnected 55 witha piston-rod, N, connectedv inthe usual Y manner with the piston held to slide in asteamcylinder, O, of any approved construction. vThe rsteanti-cyli-nder 0 is mounted onthe frainefA f l in the middle betweenthe paper pulleys `Hand 6o heoperation is as follows: A rotary motion is imparted to the shafts D and'E by the belts connected with the pulleys F and E' in 65 run the'shaftB in the direction of ftheearrow c, the steam admitted to the cylinder O forces' the piston carrying the piston-rod Noutward',`
to the left on the frame A, so .that the .paper Grand G remain disconnected fromthesaid j A wheels.V The rotary motion of the pulleys H* and H ,in the direction of the arrow b imf Vparts a rotary motion tothe wheelsG C' and!y the rack-shaft' B in` thedirection of the arrow c,'s'o'that thesaw-mill carriageis-movedfo- Ward.l When it is desired to" return the saw-v mill carriage, the rack-shaft B has to be re-Y 8o Y versed, which is accomplishedy byl reversing` f the steam in the cylinder O, so that the pistonA and'its piston-rod N are moved' totheright,y thereby imparting a similar movement tothe g bearings -J J' and I I', so that the friction-pull85 leys H H' are moved out of contact with the wheels O C', vand thelpaper pulleysG G'are" A moved in contact with the said wheels yC C',
wheels on the rack-shaft B in the `inverse direction ofthe arrow c. f It will be seenv that the force of `the steam acting against thepistonf'connected with the Y pistonrod N causes'the respective sets of paper wheels H H' andG G'fto beheld in contact 9 5 'l with the wheels C andC, and by reversing the actionof steam in the cylinder the motion-of i the racklshaft B is likewise reversed, so'A as toI impart alternately a forward and ,backward sliding motion to the saw-mill carriage. f roo Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. Thecombination,witharack-shaftmounted in stationary bearings and Wheels secured on the said shaft, of two shafts placed parallel with the said rack-shaft, one on each side'of the said wheels, pulleys secured on the said shafts and adapted to engage alternately said Wheels, bearings in wmph the said shafts are mounted to rotate, barsA for connecting the said bearings with each other, a' piston-rod connected with the said bearings,'and asteamcylinder containing a piston connected with said piston-rod, substantially as shown and de scribed.
V2. The combination, with a. cylinder provided with a piston having a piston-rod, of
bearings mounted to slide and connected lwith the said piston-rod, shafts mounted to rotate in the said bearings and provided with driving-pulleys secured on the said shafts, and a y stationary rack-shaft placed between the said shafts and carrying wheels adapted to be engaged on opposite sides by the said transmitting-pulleys, substantially as shown and de- D.
