Nirnn STATES FFIQEO PATENT l' HENRY D. l/VIOKES AND ED\VARD N. WVICKES, OF EAST SAGINAVV, MICHIGAN.
PRESS-ROLLER MECHANISM FOR GANG-SAW MILLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 291,829, dated January 8, 1884.
Application filed September 6, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that we, H. D. \VIOKES and E. N. \VIoKEs, citizens of the United States of America, residents at East Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Press-Roller Gear of a Gang-Saw Mill; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 101" the drawings is a representation of a side elevation of the machine, and Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same.
The object of this invention is to provide means for holding the gang press rollers in horizontal position, or nearly so, while sawing two or more cants or logs of unequal length side by side, at the same time retaining the same pivot action required in operating upon the uneven surface of any cant or cants as provided by the single screw, and thereby insuring safety and continued pressure, while but little time and attention on the part of the operator are required.
The invention consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim appended.
In the accompanying drawings, the letters A and A indicate the right-hand and lefthand screws, which act upon the rolls B through the bails O, to which the lower ends of said screws are pivoted. The screws A A are driven by the bevel-gear D, which are provided within their hub portions, through which the screws pass, with feathers to engage said screws. The gear D are driven by the pinions F and shafts E and E.
I I indicate sliding boxes, and J J Operating-levers connected thereto. Each sliding box is arranged in connection with a shaft, E,
which carries an iron bevel friction-wheel, H.
G G represent paper bevel friction-wheels on a shaft, S, which is operated by power applied to a pulley, T, thereon. When one of the sliding boxes is moved forward by means of its lever J, the shaft E is moved to cause its bevel-wheel H to engage one of the wheels G on the shaft S, and when said shaft is moved in the opposite direction by means of the lever and sliding box the bevel-wheel H will be caused to engage the other wheel G, The bevelgear on the shaft E can therefore be turned in either direction to operate the bevel wheels D and move the screws up or down, as the case may be.
P represents the nuts which engage the screws A A, said nuts having wings or abutments which move in vertical grooves or bearings z 011 the frame; and L L are strong spiral -springs which bear on the nuts, and allow sufficient play for the pivotal action at the lower ends of the screws when they are connected to the bails 0.
Having described this invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
In a gang-saw mill, the combination, with the frame carrying the pressure-roller B and its bail C, of the right-hand and left-hand screws A A, attached at their lower ends to said frame, the bevel-gears at their upper ends operated upon by bevel-gears and power-shaft, the friction-gear for reversing the motion of the screws, the sliding boxes I, levers J, for operating the same, spiral springs L L, and nuts P P, arranged upon the screws within the grooved bearings z, substantially as speci fied.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY D. \VICKES. EDIVARD N. IVICKES.
