Description
*UNITED STATES GEORGE FORD, OF NEW HARMONY, INDIANA., f n
PATENT 'A GATE.
SPECIFICATION yforming part of Leners Patent No.' 381,063, dated Apfn 1o, 1a88.`f
Application filed August 21,1686. Serial No. 211.551. g (No model.) I l To all whom it may concern.- f
Beit known thatl, GEORGE FORD, a citiz en ofthe United States, residing at New Harmony, in the .county of Posey and State of, Indiana, have invented a new and useful Im-V provementin Gates and Gate-Hangings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
` clear, and exact description of the construc tion and operation ofthe same. n
My invention in an improvement in gates; and 1t vconsists incertain novel'constructions and combinations of parts,as will be described and claimed,.-
In the drawings, Figurel is a-n elevation, partly in perspective, of a gate constructed according to myinvention. Fig. 2 is a detail 1 view of the under side of the connectingbar.
Fig. `3 is a detail view ofthe gate-post. Fig.
. Liris a'detail view of the lift-bar'aud its connections.A Fig. 5 is a detail, partly iu vertical section, ou about line w, Fig. l.
The gate is arranged vbetweentwo latchposts, A A, and is made of two sections, B B,
shown in the drawings.
Forv the purpose of overcoming friction interpose rollers F between the loop and thel .,post, said rollers being usually journaled ou supportsf, connected with the post E. On the post I support a series lof inclines, G, having easy inclined faces g and more abrupt faces g', the said faces g g. inclining in opposite directions, as shown. center of the post upward, and is` provided in its opposite sides with slots h, extended in the direction of its length. These slots h are preferably inclined or made spiral, as shown in Fig. 1, for the purpose of aiding in partially turning the gate while elevating the same ing theoperation of the invention. The connecting-bar C is suitably secured at itsendsfto 'the gate-sections, 'and has between'its endsan `openingyt', formed to fit over the tube H. On
the under side of this barV are provided lugs i', I
H, provided-with'slots h, combinedwrith th'e gate-sections, the connectingbar"'iittedjover` .the tube H,and.provided with lugs i-andlofcar .Y
encircling the opening ,as clearly shown in Fig. 2. Bearings I', preferablyv journaled rollers, as shown, are provided on the'under A tube, H,extends from the operation.
side` of the connecting-bar C, surrouudingthe j lugs i.` The hanger-rod J extends downinto thetube E, and is connectedwith thelcross rod o'r'shaftK, which engages the lugs "L", and 55 g thepw'alls of the inclined slots 7L being prefers` ably provided withrollersy k c,.to reduce the friction of contact with suchvparts ifandh. L l, To the upper end of the `rod J are'connected the levers L, pivoted in brackets L', mounted 6o onthetubeH. j l, f Ihe operation of this construction will loeV f readily understoodLIt/will be noticed that the gate beingpivoted centrally any resisting' action of the wind ou outside; of said pivot 65 t A will be counteracted by the opposing action of the wind on the opposite portion, so that the ,gate may be turned as freely in windyas in other weather. Il employfour ofthe inclines G, so that the gate willl be given a quarter- .70' turn at each Operation. As thehanger-rod is lifted in tube H by the levers or in` other su'it y A able manner, the cross-barwill 'engage under the connecting-bar and withfone of thelugs i thereof.v ,By reason of theselugs the cross- :'75 shaft: is held frointurning under the connecting-bar, and the said bar is moved with-V the y gate around as the shaft traverses the spiral or inclined slotsh of the tube H.v This liftingof l i the gate braises *and turns it past the crownfoffso the inclines G onto the .easy orgraduallyy inf clined face g, down which theconnecting-,bar moves, carrying the gateto its open position, the lugs t" s lidinglover 'the' cross-shat`t,ffor` which purpose one side, i3, of eachl ofthe said k8 5 f lugs is inclined or beveled, as shown. Thus the gate .isI opened or given one-quarterof a turn or revolution, and it is closedby'a like] WhatIclaimis 1. The combination'of the gate proper,f;the. gate-post, the tube H, having slotsh, the in,- clines G," the bearings'gand thelhanger-frpd' and cross-shaft, substantially as set forth'.V 2. The combination of the gate,tl 1e'p `ost,1thl inclines G, the lugs t', the tube-H,havi ng -slots yh, the hanger-rod, the bearings l', and thecross-4r shaft, substantially as set forth. f y y 8. The'post E, havinginclin'esG,andtube' K IOO u ings I', the hanger-1od,andthe cross-shaft, substantially as set; forth.
4. The combination of the central post, the
the lugs i', t-hehanger-rod, the cross-shaft', and the levers, substantial] y as set; forth.
inclines G, the bearings I', for engaging such GEORGE FORD' 5 inclines, the tube H, having inclined slots h, Witnesses:
the gatesections, the loop-hinge fitted over the post; and connected with the gate sections,
