Description

w. T. EDDY.
Lamp Heater. 2%. 3 .292. 1 Patented Apr 7. 1863.
73?): m. V r 7441" Inventarr UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLARD T. EDDY, OF WEST HOBOKEN, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVED LAMP-HEATER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. SSJ 02, dated April 7, 1863.
T0 aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLARD T. EDDY, of West Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Lamp-Heater; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 represents a vertical central section of my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same.
Similar letters of reference in both views indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in a lamp-chimney with two or more openings in its bottom to fit to two or more burners in such a manner that one chimney can be used simultaneously for two or more flames. The invention consists also in the arrangement of two or more openings in the top of a bulb of a lamp'chimney in such a manner that one of said openings serves to carry off the products of combustion, and the other opening or openings can be used similar to the holes in the top plate of a stove to receive vessels containing the articles to be heated and to expose the bottoms of said vessels to the direct action of the heat from the flames ot' the burners.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.
A represents the oil-reservoir of a lamp, made of cast-iron or any other suitable material, and provided with handle B, which serves to carry the same from one place to another in the ordinary manner. The top plate of the oil-reservoir A is furnished with two or more burners, U, which are secured to the same by means of projecting annular flanges a, as clearly shown'in Fig. 1 of the drawings, or in any other suitable manner.
D is the lamp-chimney, the bottom edge of which is fitted in and fastened to a plate, b, of cast-iron or other suitable material, and said plate is provided with two or more openings, 0, corresponding in number and position to the burners (J, and provided with projecting flanges fitting into the burners, so that the cmmney can be placed on the burners and one chimney will serve simultaneously for two or more burners. If three or more burners are used the chimney will be supported perfectly steady, preventing all danger of upsetting the same by accident or carelessness.
The bulb E of my chimney is provided with a top plate, (1, and this top plate is furnished with two or more holes, e c, the hole 6 leading to the chimney D, which carries off the products of combustion, anl the hole or holes 6 to serve in a similar manner as the holes in the top of a stove-plate-that is, to receive the vessels which contain the articles or sub stances to be heated, and expose the bottoms of said vessels to the direct action of the flames emanating from the burners G.
The hole 0 is provided with a cover, f, and if it is desired to place a vessel on the top at the plate 01 this cover is put on, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
If the chimney is supported by three or more burners, the vessels containing the articles or substances to be heated can be placed on the top plate without danger of upsetting the chimney, and by removing the cover from the hole 6 the heat can be applied to said vessels 'in the most economical and advantageous manner, and, if the bulb E is made of glass or other transparent material, the flames of the lamp serve the double purpose of heating the contents of the vessel or vessels placed on the top plate and of illuminat in g the room in which the lamp may be placed.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A lamp-chimney having two or more openings in its bottom to fit simultaneously to two or more burners, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
2. The arrangement of two or more holes, 0 e, in the top of the bulb E of a lamp-chin1-. ney, substantially as and for the purpose described.
WILLARD T. EDDY.
