POCKET-BOOK FRAME.

Be it known that l, BENNo VOM EIGEN, of Newark, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket Book Frames, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain improvements in pocket-book frames and means for fastening the same,whereby the reliable clamping of the leather and lining of the body of the pocket-book is obtained and the detaching of any part of the same from the frame pre vented; and the invention consists of a pocketbook frame the jaws of which are bent in such a manner that the side walls form with the upper inclined part an outer obtuse and an inner oblique angle, the outer obtuse angle reenforcing the jaws and producing the tight clamping of the same to the leather or other fabric from which the body of the pocketbook is made.

The invention consists, secondly, of an improved locking device which is composed of an exterior casing attached to one jaw of the frame and provided'with end lugs for retaining an interior spring which is made integral with a laterally extending tongue having a finger-piece, said tongue being guided in a recess of the casing and adapted to engage by a slot a catch or projection on the second jaw, as will appear more fully hereinafter, and finally be pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved pocket-book frame. Fig. 2 is avertical transverse section, drawn on a larger scale, of one jaw of my improved frame, showing it applied to the fabric of which the body of the pocketbook is composed. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section of the jaws and fastener on line a: m, Fig. 1. Fig. 4. is a vertical longitudinal section of the fastening device of the frame, drawn on a larger scale; and Fig. 5 is a horizontal section of the fastener on line yr Fig. 4.

In the drawings, A A represent the jaws of which my improved pocket book frame is made. Thejawsarepivotedin theusual manner at the ends and bentin such a manner that the outer and inner side walls, a a, form with the upper inclined part, b, of the jaws, respect ively, an outer obtuse angle at d and an inner oblique angle at d, as shown clearly in Fig. 3. The obtuse angle formed by the upper part and the outer side wall of the jaws A Aserves to re-enforce the same by imparting thereto a greater degree of stiffness than that possessed by the jaws heretofore in use.

My improved construction furnishes a suificient space for the proper expansion of the edge ofthe fabric at theinterior ofthejaw, so that, and consequently, the fabric is not liable to be crowded out of the jaw when the edges of the jaw are closed on the same. Jaws of the shape described have the further advantage that the lower edges of the same bind more tightly onto the fabric, so as to retain the same in a more perfect and reliable manner than is the case in the frames herctoforein use.

The jaws are locked together by a fastening device which consists of a casing, 13, applied to thejaw A, and ofa loekiugspring, O, that engages a catch or projection, j", on the jaw A. The casing Bis provided at its innerface with a recess, 6. The spring 0 is placed longitudinallyin the casing 13 and made integral with a laterally extending tongue, f, that passes through the recess 6 of the casing B, and that is provided at its outer end with a finger-piece, D,whic-h is riveted or otherwise attached to the tongue f. The ends of the spring 0 are retained by means of inwardlybent lugs arranged at the ends of the casing B, so that the same is held in position therein when the casing is attached to the jaw A, and cannot be removed therefrom. A slot, f, in the tongue f serves to engage the projection f 2 on the jaw A, so as to lock thereby the jaws together. The casing is attached to the jaw A by means of projecting lugs g at its end,.

which pass through recesses of the jaw A, and are bent over at the inside of the same, so as to form a rigid connection between the casing and jaw. By making the spring and tongue in one piece and retaining the spring by the end lugs of the casing a very simple and effective fastener for pocket-book frames is obtained.

Having thus described myinvention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. Apocket-book frame provided with jaws, the side walls of which are bent so as to form an obtuse outer and an oblique inner angle with the top portion of the jaw, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination,in a pocketbook frame, with thejaws of the same, of an open-bottomed casing attached to one jaw and provided with av recess at the side, a spring located in said casing, said spring having a laterally-extending slotted tongue, and a projection or catch in the other jaw adapted to be engaged by said spring-tongue, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination,in a pocket-book frame, of onejaw provided with a casing open at the bottom, said casing having inwardlybent lugs and a recess at the inner side, of a spring retained in said casing, said spring having a laterallyextending tongue provided with a slot and finger-piece, and a projection or catch on the other jaw adapted to be engaged by the slot of the spring-tongue, substantially as set forth.
