FICE.
JOHN W. RIGGS, OB FORT PLAIN, NEW YORK.
GOOKING-STOVE.
Specification cf Letters Patent 1\To. 3,807, dated. October 30, 184=4=.
T0 all wh0m 2'If may c0nce1m Be it known that I, JOHN W. RIGGS, 0f Fort Plain, Montgomery county, and State of New York, have invented a new and use ful Improvement in Cooking-Stoves, which is described as follows, reference being had t0 the annexed drawings 0f the same, making part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a vertical transverse seccion of the stove, at the center. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of clit-to.
The fi1e chamber Aoven Band funnel C, are made in the usual manner.
The improvement consists, in combining with the aforesaid stove, an additional, und smaller fire chamber D, which is so 2x1- ranged, as that, while it answers all the pur poses 0f cooking, baking, &c., it is operated without sensibly heating the mein stove. The heatbeing entirely excluded from the interior ofthe mein stove, by the oven plate T, and damper M, ;md passing under, and up, tl1e back side cf the oven, and fire box, as shown in the drawing, (E E E.) thus uniting in the szune stove, 2u1c1 occupying the same space 0f ordinary stoves, and atthe sarne cost, a complete summer, and Winter stove, either operating we1l separate and distinct, fron1 the other, er both ab the same timewhile this additional fire chamber D, accomplishes, in the most perfect manner, another imp0rtant and intended eifect, viz, that- 0f heating the]oottom of ehe oven B, equally with the top, which cannot be effected by any stove having the fi1e all at t11e t0p 015 the oven,"as is, anc1 must be the case, with all fuel saving stoves. This fire 01mmber D, may be formed by casting its bottom, 2md ende, in connection with the mein stove, 01 separate und attached by tongues anc1 grooves, 1100ks and eyes, 01' other convenient means. It is the whole length 0f the stove, say about 2 feet 9 inches high and about 9, wide, the top plate projecting, so as t0 form a hearth, of any desirable Width. The back 0f this chamber, is a loose pleite R, placed in grooves in the end plates. In the center is another loose plat-e d, dividing the chamber,
and confining the heat, if desired 130 a sing1e boiler, the top plate H, having two perforations for boilers, I the grate, J the ash pan, O bottom plate.
The upper, or Winter fire cha;mber, comsists of two side plates P, resting in grooves on the upper p1ate, 0f the oven, (instead cf sinking as in others,) and a third, or bottom plate L, which is movable, and if desired in sun1mer, may be raisecl sonne four inches, to grooves marked S S.
In the front plate, near its upper edge is a slicle K opening a draft 011 either side, which serves f0r the escape 0f stezun, and
srnoke when cooking in front, and also f01 the emission of 1ight, in the evening, and so equalize the fire above. The damper M, slides in grooves formed in the back plate, near its upper edge, where the smid plate is perforated, which perforations give exit t0 the firce from the upper fire place. By this damper M, the fire may be driven around the 0ven, (if desired for any purpo-se,) by dmwing at the same time the damper resti11g 011 ehe projecting edge T, 0f the upper plate of the oven, which projecting edge, is also perfomted, for the pu1pose last mentioned, on1y. The pro-jection, being designed eifectually t0 exclude the heatbelovv, from passing into, and heating the body 0f the stove above.
I do 110fi claim, an extra st0ve, 01 fire chamber, nor the construction 0f my main stove, but- Vhat I C10 c1aim as my invention, and :Whi0h Idesire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s,
The nlanner in which 1 have combined the extra fire box D, With the main stove, that is, there being between the fire b0x and oven B, three division plates, or two flue spaces, for the purpose above described, the mein stove being constructed substantially as described, viz., having a fire chamber above the oven, und the flues, and dampers, arranged and 0Perating, as set forth.
