UNIT-ED ASTATES "PATENT OFFICE. u
OYRUs s. DEAN, 'OF FORT ERIE, ONTARIO, oANADA,fAssiGNOR To yGEORGE vw. DEAN, OF sAME FLAOE, AND OYRUs H; WOODRUFF, OF BUFFALO,
NEW YORK.
AIR-COMPRESSOR. l
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 380,195, dated March 27 1888. Application filed April 19, 1886. Renewed September 17, 1887. Serial No. 249,981. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OYRUs S. DEAN, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain', and a resident ofFort Erie, in the Provinceof Ontario,
in the Dominion of Canada, ,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air-` Compressors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full', clear, and exact description of the invention, which will. enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form aV part of this specification, and in which- Figure .1 is a side view of my improved aircompressor, showing the cylinder in section. Fig. l'x' is a detail view on anenlarged scale of the valve mechanism. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on line :c x, Fig. 1. n
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relationto air-compress ors; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of an air-compressor preferably intended to be operated by hand, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letters A indicate legs secured at the lower ends in a base, B, and at the upper ends to a table, C, having two parallel slots, D D, in it parallel to the side edges. Two arms, E E, are pivoted with their lower ends to ears F F upon the base-plate and project upward and rock in the slots in the table, and the rectangularly-bent bifurcated arms G G of a hand-lever, H, are pivoted to the upper ends of these arms, havingV their fulcra upon the ends of the rocking arms. rIhe outer ends of these lever-arms are united by a handle, I, by means of which the machine may be carried when not in`use, and the arms are pivoted at their bends to trunnions J J, projecting from near the lower end of a cylinder, K, which has a closed top and slides upon a cylinder, L, secured upon the table. The arms of the lever converge at the'other side of the cylinder from the points WhereV they are pivoted to the trunnions of the cylinder' and unite into the hand-lever.
The top M of the inner cylinder is formed with an annular series of perforations, N, near ery-pipe.
the edge, and the central portion of the top is depressed to forma cylindrical chamber, O,
having a pipe, P, secured to its lower end, u which pipe passes up through the table and.` through the cylinder, having a 'safety-valve, Q, outside of t-he cylinder, andfextending to the article or vessel desired to contain the compressed air, the said pipe being the deliv,
An annular packing-ring, R, having its edge S bent upward, is placed upon the annular portion of the top of the cylinder, having per- `forationsregistering with the perforationsin the top, and the annularvperfor'ated flange lT of a cap, U,itting into the upper end of the chamber in the top of the cylinder, is secured to the top of the cylinder by means of screws yV. The cap has an upwardly-projecting portion, W, having an outwardly-projecting flange 7o at its upper end, and thelower end of the cap is closed and hasa central perforation, X,and an annular series of perforations, Y. e An annular valve, Z, covers the perforations, in the top of the cylinder and in the washer4 75 or packing-ring and in the iiange of the cap, and is stopped in its ,upward movements by the outwardly-projecting flange .of the upper portion of the cap.
A circular valve-disk, A, is secured upon the lower'end of a valve-stem, B', which slides in thecentral perforation of the bottom of thev cap, the disk playing upon the under side of the perforated bottom, and the upper portion ofV this valve-stem has a, spring, C', coiled around it and bearing against the upper'side of the bottom of the cap and against a head, D', upon the upper end of the valve-stem.
The inner cylinder is provided with air-inlets E, through which the .airmay enter the cylinder. These holes or inlets are arranged around the cylinder j ust below the lower edge of the outer cylinder whenit is at its highest point, thus permitting the air to enter the cylinder at each stroke'and preventing its escape, (except through the compressor apparatus, as the holes are closed as soon` as the outer cylinder has been moved downward the distance of the diameterof the holes. This arrangement dispensesv with additional valve mechanism, whichwould be necessary if it were not for such a location of the holes.
It will now be seen that when the hand-lever is tilted upward it raises the outer cylinder, whichslidessnuglyand perfectlyair-tightupon the inner cylinder, and the air will be drawn into the outer cylinder from the inner cylinder through the perforationsin the top of theinner cylinder, vand raising the annular valve upon the same; and when now the hand-lever is 'depressed theairwithin the outer cylinder will be compressed, forcing the valvedisk upon the under sideof the bottom ofthe cap downward againstits spring and forcingthe airinto the delivery-pipe, through which it may be conveyed to the vessel for its reception, the safety-valve preventing any compression of the air within thereceptacle or within thecompressor greater than the strength of the vessel or compressor which has previously been tested.
By raising the outer cylinder o' from the inner cylinder the cap may be removed from the top oftheinner cylinder by unsere wing the fasteningscrews, and all parts of the mechanism may then be repaired or inspected.
When the compressor is not in use and itis desired to transport it from one place to another, the hand-lever is depressed until the handle, which connects the ends of the bifurcated and rectangularly-bent arms of the lever, is immediately above the head of the outer cylinder, when the compressor may be grasped by this handle and lifted and carried.
Having thus described my invention,l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesm 1. In an aircomp1'essor, the combination of an inner cylinder having air-inlets and having its top formed with an annular portion having perforations and a downwardly-extending cylindrical chamber having the outlet-pipe secured in its bottom, a packingring having its edge bent upward and fitting upon the annular portion of the top having registering-perforations, a cap having 'an annular flange iitting upon the packing-ring and secured tothe top by screws and formed with registering perforations, and having an upwardly-extending portion formed with an outwardly-bent flange at its upper edge and a. downwardlyprojecting portion fitting in the upper portion of the chamber, and having a central perforation and 5o an annular series of perforations, an annular valve playing between the flanges of the cap upon the perforated flange, a circular valvedisk playing upon the under side of the bottom of the cap, having a stem sliding in the central perforation and provided with acoiled spring bearing against the bottom and a head upon the stem, and an outer cylinder having a closed head and sliding tightly upon the inner cylinder, having means for reciprocating 6o it, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. In an air-compressor, the combination of a support consisting of legs connecting a baseplate and a table, a pair of arms pivoted with the lower ends to two ears upon the base and rocking with the upper portions in slots in the table, a hand-lever bifurcated to form rectan gularly-bent arms fnlcrumed at the middles of the outer portions upon the upper ends of. the rocking arms, a handle connecting the outer 7o ends of the lever-arms, a cylinder secured to the table and having upwardly and downwardly opening valves and outlet-pipe, and-a cylinder sliding upon the inner cylinder and having a closed top and two laterally-projecting trunnions pivoted in the bends of the lever-arms, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
3. In an air-compressor, the combination of an inner cylinder having a row of inlets or apertures just below the lower edge of the outer cylinder when at its highest point and having an interior pipe opening in a chamber having a .downwardly-opening valve, and an outer cylinder having a closed head and a lever for re ciprocating it upon the inner cylinder, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony thatI claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GYRUS S. DEAN.
