PATENT OFFICE.
ORAN W. SEELY, OF SYRAOUSE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR OPERATING CHURNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 38,01 3, dated March 24, 1863.
To @ZZ whom t may concern.-
Beit known that I, ORAN W. SEELY, of Syracuse, county of Onond-aga, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Ohurns; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,
and exact description ot' the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference thereon.
My invention relates to an improvement in the means for operating thedash-churn, and it consists in the employment of a vertically-re ciproeating connecting-rod, the upper end of which is connected to the churn-dasher and the lower end of which is connected to a balanced rocking lever, arranged and operating as will be hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawing, A represents a base or platform, to which are secured in any suitable manner four stout uprights, B B', which are connected by longitudinal beams O C', and cross-ties D and D. The upper and lower longitudinal beams are further strengthened by uprights E midway of their length.
F represents the main or driving shaft, resting on and properly journaled in the longitudinal beams O, on one end of which shaft is secured the crank-h andle for driving the same. The other end of this shaft is provided with the driving spur-wheel G, which meshes with and drives pinion H on shaft I, which is journaled in uprights E E and provided with the fiy-wheel K on its outer end, and midway of its length and of the width of the frame and platform, with a short crank, L.
N represents a horizontal balanced lever connected vto the rock-shaft O, which is journaled in the lower longitudinal beams, O. Motion is imparted to said balanced lever and rock-shaft by crank L on shaft I, through connecting-rod M. 'Ihe uprights B', it will be setn from the drawing, extend for about onethird of their length above the longitudinal beams C, being connected at their upper ends by the cross-tie D. This cross-tie is peforated midway of its length between the uprights,
and forms a fixed guide to the vertically-reciprocatin g connecting rod or slide a, which has its lower end connected to one end of balanced lever N. The upper end of this rod is bent to a right angle, or thereabout, as at a', and is forked, as shown at a, to embrace the handle of the dasher o c c of churn P, said churn resting on an extension, A', of the platform A. This churn P ma-y be of the usual form and construction, except that I find it advantageous to employin larger churns two, three, or even more dashers perforated as shown by the drawing.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description.
The parts are few, simple of construction, not liable to get of order, and so arranged that a child may readily operate the churn. It will be observed, too, that the arrangement of mechanism is such that it may be readily connected to the dash-churn in ordinary use, thereby saving to farmers and dairymen the expense of new churns. A short, quick Ino` tion is imparted to the dasher, such as has in practice been found moet eifectivefor the work to be accomplished. By increasing the width of the frame and platform an additional crank or cranks may be placed on the shaft which operates the balanced lever, and by the employment of additional balanced levers and vertically-reciprocating slides or connecting rods working through the guide-bar, the same mechanism may be make to operate several churns at one and the same time.
What I claim as my invent-ion, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The employment ot' the vertically-reciproeatin g connectingrod a, working in guide Df, in combination with the dash-churn and the balanced lever, arranged and operating in the manner and for the purpose substantially as described.
YGRAIN W. SEELY. Witnesses:
