Abstract

An H-pile is disclosed having plate means welded to surfaces of the pile providing outwardly projecting plates for increasing the surface in contact with the soil thereby increasing the resistance offered by the pile to upward pressures. In addition the pile is stiffened thereby and driving of the pile is more stable with less likelihood of the pile deviating from a vertical position or being bent in driving. The outwardly extending plates may be provided by various structural forms.

4 Claims, 5 Drawing Figures I-I-piles driven into the soil have a tendency to rise from varying conditions such as freezing and thawing, constant changes in the load carried by the pile and the like. This tendency will vary depending upon the type of soil in which the pile is driven with usually the wet and sandy soils providing the greater problem. Increasing the surface area of the pile provides increased adherence of the soil to the pile and reduces or even eliminates the uplift of the pile.
The principal object of the invention is to construct .an I-I-pile combination with plate means having an outwardly extending plate or plates welded to one or more surfaces of the pile in order to increase the frictional resistance between the pile and soil and reduce or eliminate withdrawal or uplift of the pile after being driven into the soil as well as to strengthen and give greater rigidity to the pile.
Another object is as above and to use various forms of structural elements in order to provide outwardly extending plates and to secure the same firmly to the pile surfaces so that they will remain attached to the pile during the driving operation.
Other objects of the invention will be more apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating preferred embodiments thereof in which:
FIG. 1 is an end view of an H-pile with outwardly extending plates;
FIG. 2 is a front view of the pile of FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a front view of the pile of FIG. 1 with shorter plate means;
FIG. 4 is an end view of an I-I-pile using channels as the plate means; and
FIG. 5 is an end view of an H-pile using angles as the plate means.
The H-pile as shown in FIG. 1 includes a web with spaced flanges 11 being connected to the web at the center of the flanges providing the H form of this pile. The pile therefore has surfaces on both sides of the flanges and both sides of the web to which plate means may be welded. In FIG. 1 the plate means is a simple plate 12 extending outwardly from the outer surface of each pile flange to which it is welded and particularly shown as in alignment with the web although this alignment is not necessary. The plates are parallel with the edges of the pile and may extend the full length of the pile as in FIG. 2 or any portion thereof as shown in FIG. 3 as desired. The length is determined principally by the character of the soil in which the pile is driven. When the plate means does not extend the full length of the pile it may be located centrally or at either end thereof. The lower end 13 of each plate means may angle outwardly in order to reduce driving pressure.
The plate means of FIG. 4 comprises a channel 16 welded to a pile surfaceand shown as secured to the outer surface of each of the pile flanges 11. A channel provides a pair of outwardly extending plates 17 formed by the flanges of the channel. A front view of the channel construction of FIG. 4 would be the same as FIG. 2 for a channel extending the full length of the pile and the same as FIG. 4 for a channel extending a portion of the length of the pile.
FIG. 5 illustrates that angle irons may be used as the plate means with one flange 20 thereof forming the outwardly extending plate and the other flange 21 forming a base which is welded to the I-I-pile surface. This construction illustrates also that the web surface may be used to carry the plate means. The construction of FIG. 5 illustrates further that different forms of plate means may be used on one pile in that the pile flanges have simple plates 12, as in FIG. 1, welded thereto. In like fashion one or a plurality of the same form of plate means may be used on one pile and may be secured to any surface or surfaces of the pile. Also one pile may carry a plurality of different forms of plate means. Other known forms of structures may be used as the plate means.
It is desirable that the plate means be secured to the surfaces of the pile in symmetrical arrangement in order to assure that they will not affect the driving of the pile and cause it to deviate from a straight drive. A symmetrical arrangement does not mean that the plate means be located centrally of the pile surface to which it is attached as shown although this is the preferred form of symmetry.
I This invention is presented to fill a need for improvements in an H-pile with projecting plate means. Various modifications in structure, as well as changes in the mode of operation, assembly, and manner of use, may and often do occur to those skilled in the art, especially after benefiting from the teachings of an invention. This disclosure illustrates the preferred means of embodying the invention in useful form.
What is claimed is:
1. An I-I-pile combination comprising an H-pile having a web and a pair of pile flanges with each of said flanges having surfaces, plate means welded to at least one surface of one of said flanges including at least one outwardly extending plate extending parallel to the free edges of one of said pile flanges, the plate means having two opposite edges and extending at right angles to the surface to which it is secured, the plate means being secured to the pile solely at one edge thereof and being the sole structure added between the ends of the pile, and the plate extending for at least a portion of the length of the pile.
2. An H-pile combination as in claim 1 in which the plate means includes a plurality of outwardly extending plates welded symmetrically to corresponding surfaces of the pile.
3. An l-I-pile combination as in claim 1 in which the plate means is at least one angle iron having flanges, the outwardly extending plate being one flange and the other flange is welded to a surface of the pile.
4. An H-pile combination as in claim 1 in which the plate means includes at least one channel having a side and a pair of flanges, the side being welded to a surface of the pile and the flanges providing a pair of outwardly extending plates.

Claims (4)

1. An H-pile combination comprising an H-pile having a web and a pair of pile flanges with each of said flanges having surfaces, plate means welded to at least one surface of one of said flanges including at least one outwardly extending plate extending parallel to the free edges of one of said pile flanges, the plate means having two opposite edges and extending at right angles to the surface to which it is secured, the plate means being secured to the pile solely at one edge thereof and being the sole structure added between the ends of the pile, and the plate extending for at least a portion of the length of the pile.
2. An H-pile combination as in claim 1 in which the plate means includes a plurality of outwardly extending plates welded symmetrically to corresponding surfaces of the pile.
3. An H-pile combination as in claim 1 in which the plate means is at least one angle iron having flanges, the outwardly extending plate being one flange and the other flange is welded to a surface of the pile.
4. An H-pile combination as in claim 1 in which the plate means includes at least one channel having a side and a pair of flanges, the side being welded to a surface of the pile and the flanges providing a pair of outwardly extending plates.
