Description

G. B. HGAG.
SHEET FILING.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 4, 1912.
1,052,25 1. Patented Feb. 4, 1913.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SHEETLPILING.
To yall whom t mayoonoern Be it known that I, GEORGE B. HoAe, a citizen of the United States, a resident of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, y of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sheet-Filings', of whichthe following is a specification, the princlpleof the invention being' herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguishit from other inventions.
My invention relates to sheet-piling, and has for its object the provision of sheet'- piling elementsv which when assembled will` form a tight sheet suiliciently impervious to water and quicksand for practical use and 1n which each element is of light Weight, cheap in construction and durable, so as to be oa-f4 pable of continued and indenite use.
My said invent-ion consists of means hereinafter fully described and particularly'setI y showing the contiguous earth. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section, on an enlarged scale, 'of a fragmentary portion of the piling.
Each element of the illustrated piling embodying my invention co prises a main or body portion A; made prferably of wood plankingof the usual character, and two facing-strips B and C. One of these strips, B, is made of channel steel, and is secured to one of the two opposite sides of smaller dimension, by means of spikes or screws D passing through suitable countersunk openings b, with the ianges b and b of the channel projecting outwardly. `The other ofthe two strips, C, is of segmental crosssection, and is secured to the other of said two opposite faces by means of spikes or screws also passing through 'countersunk openingsl c, with the curved side of the strip upon the outside, as shown.
The facing-strips of similar cross-section are, of course, all made of material having the same dimensions, and the segmental Specification of Letters Patent.
and StateA Patented Feb. 4, 1913.
Application iled June 4, 1912. Serial No. 701,531.
strips are preferably of such dimensions that vwhen laid in the channels,- they will simultaneously engage the web and flanges of the latter, as shown in Fig. 3.
In assembling the piling, the elements are laid so. that a strip C will engage a strip B in the manner above described. In thus obtaining three lines of contact, a joint is obtained which will practically exclude water 'and quicksand, which is the desired end to be obtained. The dimensions 'of the strips C may, however, be made such that they env gage only the flanges, and I have found that the two lines of contact thus secured, in some cases, answer the purpose. Continued use may, inthis last described form, eventually, wear the twoengaging strips so that three lines of contact will ultimately be obtained.
While other forms of facing-strips may be used without departing from the spirit of my invention, I find the luse of channels and segmental strips rmit me to take advantage of 'material o` stock form or standard cross-section and size, a ircumstance which materially contributes to the cheapness of my construction without in any way de reciating its practical value.
yurthermore, my above described form of piling, on account of the use of wood for the body-portion, is of minimum weight, consistent with the required strength, and hence may be handled with facility and economy.
Having fully described my invention',
what I claim and desire to secure by Let- 'j ters Patent is:
1. A sheet-piling element consisting of a wooden strip of substantially rectangular crossLsection and having seoured respectively upon the Vtwo opposite sides, metal facing-strips, one of the latter being of facing-strlps, one of the latter having achannel-like cross-section andthe other having a segmental cross-section.
3. In sheet-piling, the combination of two adjacent sheet-piling elements each of whose main or body portions is formed of wood, and whose contiguous sides are provided lrespectively with a channel facing-strip and wooden strip of substantially rectangular1A cross-section andy having secured on one of the two opposite sides a facing-'strip of channel l.formation with the flanges projecting outwardly; and upon the other of said two faces, afacing-strip of such form as is adaptedy to simultaneously engage, when laid in said channelqstrip, both flanges of the latter. v i v 5. A sheet-piling element consisting of a wooden strip of substantially rectangular cross-section, and having secured on one of the two opposite sides a facing-strip of channel formation with lthe anges projecting outwardly; and upon the other sidebf 'said two faces a 44facing-strip of such form as is adapted to .simultaneously engage, when laid in said channel-strip, the web and bot-h flanges of the latter.`
Signed by me this 28th day of May, 1912.
, GEO. B. HOAG.
