E. A. GARRATT .METAL SHEET FILING Filed Aug. 7, 192 s Mat 4 77 WM Patented June 17, 1924.
ERNEST ALBERT GARRATT, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
METAL SHEET FILING.
Application filed August 7, 1923. Serial No. 656,155.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ERNEST ALBERT'GAR- RATT, of 7 8 Gracechurch Street, in the city of London, England, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Metal Sheet Piling, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to metal sheet piling of the class in which rolled metal sections are assembled edgewise and locked together to form a wall-like structure.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved construction adapted to facilitate the driving and withdrawal of the pil ing sections, and to obtain great strength of the structure with a minimum amount of material employed.
It has been proposed to construct a walllike structure formed with piles of I-beam section and locking members formed of I- or H-section having their flanges bent over inwardly to form channels adapted to receive the flanges of the main piles of I-beam section.
According to this invention the locking have flanges a a and web 6,. the web 7) preferably formed with corrugations as shown. The locking member 0 is of I-beam section, and is provided with flanges (Z bent over to form channels 0 adapted to receive the flanges a of the piling sections. The web of the locking member is corrugated in the form shown in Fig. 1. and is formed with parallel portions forming shoulders 7 upon which the flanges of the main piles or I- beams will bear, the said corrugations providing additional bearing points (Fig. 1). By means of this construction the flanges a of the piling sections only have a hearing at certain points against the web of the looking member and the operations of driving and withdrawing the piling sections are consequently considerably facilitated.
In Fig. 2 the locking member is formed wit-h a straight web 9, the shoulders 7 remaining as in Fig. l and being the only bearing points between the flanges a and locking member a.
In Fig. 3 the locking member has a straight web with ribs or projections h forming additional bearing points.
The formation of the locking member 0 renders it almost impossible for the piling sections to freeze or rust together. and thus greatly facilitates the work of withdrawing the piling.
The spaces between the flanges a and looking member 0 may be filled with a caulking material if it is desired to make a perfectly tight joint in clear water.
The shoulders f on the locking member prevent any distortion of the shape of the latter should abnormal axial pressure develop during driving.
/Vhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In metal sheet piling, the combination with two I-beam sections of piling, of a locking member of I-beam section connecting the adjacent flanged ends of said piling sections, the web of said locking member being formed with thickened end portions and a relatively thinner corrugated metal portion intermediate said end portions.
2. In metal sheet piling, the combination with two I-beam sections of piling. of a locking member of I-beam section connecting the adjacent flanged ends of said piling sections, the web of said locking member being formed with thickened end portions. a rela tively thinner medial portion. and at least one rib in said medial portion adapted to make contact with the end flange of the adjacent piling section.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
ERNEST ALBERT GARRATT.
