Definitions

  • This invention relates to the application of coating materials in a fluid state to a receptor surface in the form of a moving web and is concerned with the method and apparatus of the kind in which fluid is applied to the surface through a porous member.
  • an apparatus for applying coating material in a fluid state to a receptor surface comprising a member drilled to provide pores of uniform size uniformly distributed in the member to provide a porous member, and means for dispensing fluid through the said member to the receptor surface.
  • the block is formed in a chamber or recess provided in a coating head which includes a base plate at the bottom of the chamber, and said plate being drilled with the said block to provide the desired porosity.
  • the block may be made of metal loaded epoxy resin.
  • the moving web is held in contact with the coating head by an air supported membrane.
  • FIG. 1 is aperspective view of a coating device for applying a coating to a moving web
  • FIG. 2 is an end view of the coating device shown in FIG. 1,
  • FIG. 3 is a detail view of the porous member shown in FIG. 2, and
  • FIG. 4 is a perspective view of the device used for air supporting the membrane.
  • the coating device comprises an applicator head generally indicated at 2 which is suspended by means of arms 4 mounted on brackets 6 of a crossbar 8 of the frame 10 of the machine above the surface of a moving web 12 to be coated.
  • the applicator head 2 is provided with adjustable air-pressure control means 14 for controlling the loading of the head 2 from the regulator 16. Beneath the web 12 is positioned means for maintaining the web 12 in uniform contact with the applicator head 2 comprising an air-supported membrane 18 in the form of a belt made for example of fabric reinforced silicone rubber 0. l4 thick passing over rollers 20 and 21, the roller 21 being the driving roller.
  • the bottom roller 20 is adjustable to control tension.
  • the belt 18 is tendency driven by means of roller 21 which is coupled to the main drive of the coating machine through a magnetic particle coupling (not shown) so as to control the drag of the belt on the supported web.
  • a fourth roller 22 is a roll which can either be kept at chill temperature or heated if required by means of cooling or heating liquid or gas so as to maintain the belt at any temperature suitable for the particular coating conditions.
  • the rollers 20 are mounted on a framework 24 attached to the frame 10 of the machine.
  • air supporting means 26 for holding the belt 18 in contact with web 12 by which means the web 12 is held in contact with the applicator head 2.
  • the air supporting means 26 takes the form of a box, the details of which are described later with reference to FIGS. 2 and 4.
  • the applicator head 2 is built to provide an elongate coating chamber 30 having three inlets 32 in the top surface.
  • the chamber 30 contains a porous block 34 and a filter 36 is arranged above the block in the chamber 30.
  • the bottom wall of the chamber 30 is formed integrally with the walls 38 and provides a base plate 40 which is in contact with the web to be coated.
  • Other features contained in the head 2 are L-shaped heaters 42 for maintaining the coating at the correct temperature and a smoothing bar assembly 44 incorporating two downwardly projecting smoothing bars 46.
  • the block 34 is made by pouring metal loaded epoxy resin into the chamber 30 where it is cured in situ in the bottom portion of the chamber 30.
  • the base plate 40 and block 34 together form the porous member which is made by drilling a plurality of holes 48 through the plate 40 and the block 34.
  • the diameter of the drilled holes or pores 48 and the distance between said holes and the thickness of the block are predetermined depending upon the material which is to be applied to the web so as to provide a calibrated impedance to flow.
  • a porous member may consist of a plate 40 1/16 inches in thickness and a block 34 of epoxy resin 3/16 inch in thickness.
  • holes or pores 48 are drilled to provide rows 1/16 inch apart and the pores are 0.02 inch in diameter at 1/l6 inch centres apart, the pores of one row being staggered in relation to those of the next row.
  • FIG. 4 shows in detail the means for air supporting the belt 18.
  • a box 50 fixed under the upper run of the belt 18 is divided into compartments 51 and a top plate 52 is bolted to the body of the box.
  • the top plate 52 is perforated in zones.
  • Zone a provides a row ofjets under a roller 19 maintaining the web 12 in contact with the belt 18 before the web 12 reaches the coating head 2.
  • Zone 17 provides a double row of jets under the coating head 2 and zone 0 provides a double row ofjets under the two smoothing bars 46.
  • the holes are of diameter l/32 at 3/32 inch centres.
  • Air is supplied under pressure to the box the compartments 51 being individually fed through apertures 53 with an adjustable air supply. The air emerges from the top plate 52 through the rows of apertures a, b and c as jets of air.
  • the epoxy resin block 34 can be replaced with a block of sintered material or multi-layered mesh but there should be a complete seal between its edges and the walls of the chamber 30.
  • the air supported membrane 18 may have a pat terned surface.
  • the pattern can take the form of recesses for applying localised heavy weight of coating since the weight of coating emerging from the head 2 is a function of the force of pressure on the web 12 as supported by the belt 18 against the coating head 2.
  • a dual coating head may be provided for applying fast curing materials, i.e. short pot life two part adhesives and coatings by feeding the components separately and mixing within the head.
  • the apparatus according to the invention can also be used for coating webs with for example foamed polyurethane by depositing the polymer and the foaming agent together on the web so that it foams in situ after coating.
  • the apparatus can also be combined with a laminating nip for applying a further layer of material to the web 12.
  • Apparatus for applying coating material in a fluid state to a moving web which comprises:
  • said chamber being defined by side walls and a substantially flat base plate, the lower portion of said chamber being filled with a block member formed in place by pouring a hard setting material onto said base plate, said base plate and said block material being drilled simultaneously to provide therethrough a plurality of uniformly distributed, perfectly aligned pores of uniform bore, said pores providing direct fluid communication from said chamber to the moving web;
  • said means for disposing the web in a flat condition against said base plate, said means comprising a moving belt bearing on the underside of the moving web and a plurality offluid jets acting on the underside of said belt.
  • Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said fluid jets comprise jets of pressurized air, and wherein said jets are directed against the underside ofsaid belt at locations corresponding to the nip points of the coating apparatus.
