e@ NM1 v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PETER W. NEEFUS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN PONCHOS.
Specieation forming part of Letters Patent No. 37,9151), dated March 17, 1863.
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, PETER W. NEEEUs, of the city of New York, in the State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Ponchos; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to accompanying drawings, and to the letters and marks thereon, forming part ot' this specication.
Figure 1 of these drawings represents a poncho ot' the ordinary form, having a pocket lying parallel to and near the outer piece or garment, and rmly attached to it around its edges by liquid rubber, gum, or equivalent material, and as is indicated by letters a bc d. To the corner`marked a, or at some other suitable point, is inserted and rmly affixed a small metal tube, e, by means of which, through the agency ot' the milled head screw f, an opening is made in the tube to inflate the pouch or pillow, and thus form easily and readily, at a moment, an excellent pillow. The reversing of the screw j' opens the valve and lets out the air, leaving the piece or garment to assume its usual form and proportions. The same formula of construction is applicable to blankets.
Figs. 2 and 3 show sections of tents where g g are elongations ot' the sides turned inward, which, it' made of canvas or other porous material, should be rendered suitably nonporous by the application of caoutchouc, (rubber gum,) bitumen, or their equivalents, and the air-chamber or pillow constructed as in Fig. l. This chamber or sack can be made of v any suitable material, ot' rubber coating, or of any airtight fabric. No additional lining will be needed to construct the air-chamber, but if vmade of ordinary cloth or porous material, a vulcanized silk pouch or other nonporous fabric may be used, which, when inserted by being iniiated, will afford the weary traveler a pillow or cushion by simply turning up the collar. Any other part of the garment may be used, as may be regarded preferable. This will give a comfortable pillow, Whether in a railroadcar, steamboat, or in any situation where rests may be desirable. 1t is equally adapted to all descriptions of ladies dresses or garments. For tents or camp-life it is indispens'able.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A poncho convertible into a blanket or tent, and having attached to it an air-pillow or airpouch, as and for the purpose substantially as described.
This specification signed this 20th dayof December, 1862.
