Definitions

  • This invention is directed to a boring device for positioning and fastening hinge members to a door and frame combination. More specifically, this invention is directed to a device for the proper positioning and mounting of so-called invisible hinge devices.
  • a longitudinal recess is provided in the door panel into which the intermeshed hinge parts fold when the door is closed.
  • the door is detachably connected by means of an angle piece to a pivotable hinge part mounted on the frame.
  • the angle piece must be properly aligned with the door and set at a corresponding distance from the frame or the hinge part flush supported in the recess of the frame.
  • various boring devices of different types have been devised. These devices which are intended to provide a drilling or boring jig for properly aligning the members frequently do not meet the desired requirements with the necessary accuracy. In many occasions these devices are cumbersome or difficult to handle.
  • a screw lamp device having a back supporting leg and a longitudinal edge parallel to the axis of the mounting screw.
  • back supporting leg includes the boring jigs or jacks through which the drill or bit is inserted for cutting the mounting holes.
  • the elongated edge of the clamp is provided with interchangeable slide-like adaptor pieces which fit over the outer surface and end of the elongated edge.
  • the adaptor pieces having an internal channel fitting the edge of the clamp, are of various external dimensions to be inserted in a recess of corresponding size in a door.
  • the size of the recess corresponds to the size of the hinge members used.
  • a stop on the elongated edge portion of the clamp properly positions the clamp with respect to the recess.
  • the boring device of the present invention can also be used with hinge members wherein the hinge part mounted in the door is of a cylindrical configuration.
  • the recess provided in thedoor is thus a round hole or bore.
  • the adaptor piece for the boring clamp in such case may be provided with a pivoted circular recess.
  • the present invention can be used with the elongated recess type hinge or the circular mounted hinge.
  • FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the boring device of thepresent invention and the elongated mounting recess in a fragmentary view of a door;
  • FIG. 2 is a sectional view of a clamp adaptor piece taken along the line lIII of FIG. 3;
  • FIGS. 3 and 4 are side and top views respectively of a clamp adaptor piece according to the present invention.
  • FIG. 5 is a sectional view of another embodiment of the clamp adaptor piece according to the present invention taken along the line V--V of FIG. 6;
  • FIGS.'6 and 7 show a side and top view respectively of the further embodiment of the clamp adaptor piece
  • FIG. 8 is a diagrammatic view of the boring device mounted within the door recess and secured to the frame for proper drill positioning;
  • FIG. 9 is a side view of the adaptor piece of FIG. 3 mounted on the edge of the boring device.
  • FIG. 10 is a side view showing the further embodiment of the adaptor piece of FIG. 6 mounted on the edge of the boring device.
  • the boring device of the present invention includes an adjusting screw spindle 2, a pressure plate 3 secured thereon, and a handle 4.
  • the pressure plate may be mounted for rotation with respect to the screw 2 which is conventional in a screw clamp device.
  • Yoke bar or elongated edge member 9 has an outwardly extending stop member 10. If desired the stop member 10 may extend above and below the surface of the elongated edge member 9.
  • a lateral stop 11 is provided along the inside edge of the elongated member 9. The stop 11 provides an abutment face for positioning the clamp device against the rear edge of the door 12 and at the same time provides an abutment surface for the edge of the frame positioned between a leg 7 and the pressure plate 3.
  • the screw clamp deviceof the present invention is designed basically in the configuration of the conventional C-clamp, and includes the yoke shown generally at 5 with a generally perpendicular leg 6 through which the screw spindle 2 is threadedly mounted and a backup leg 7. Boring jacks or drill guides 8 are positioned in spaced relation within the leg 7 and are generally perpendicular to the inside surface of the leg 7.
  • space and location of the bore jacks 8 can be arranged as desired for the frame mounting holes depending-on the location of thescrew holes in the hinge plate to be secured to the frame.
  • An elongated recess 15 is provided within the edge and rear surface of the door panel 12 for the recessed mounting of the door hinge element.
  • the elongated side member 9 is fitted with a connecting surface or fixture adaptor 14 which is narrow enough to fit within the most narrow recess size anticipated.
  • An adaptor piece 16 is shown in FIGS. 2 4 and is provided in U-shaped cross-section with an outer flap or top piece 17.
  • the internal channel 16a of the adaptor piece fits securely on the connecting surface 14 of the boring device 1.
  • Adaptor pieces of varying width may be provided as needed to fit any of the common recess sizes which are required for various sized hinge members.
  • the internal channel 16a of each such adaptor piece is the same size to fit the connecting surface 14. In this way a plurality of adaptor pieces 16 may be provided to allow the boring'device 1 to be used with any size recess 15.
  • a hole 18 is provided in the flap or top 17 so that the piece 16 may be secured by means of a screw or the like to the front edge of the fitting piece 14. (See FIG. 8).
  • the boring device 1 is slidably inserted into the recess 15 until the stops l and 11 are positioned flush against the edge and rear surface of the door 12.
  • the screw 2 is then turned by the handle 4 until the pressure plate 3 firmly holds the frame 13 against the surface of the leg 7.
  • the door 12 may be removed and the mounting holes may be bored in the frame by inserting a proper sized drill to the desired depth through the bore jacks or guides 8.
  • FIGS. 7. Another embodiment of an adaptor piece is shown in FIGS. 7. This embodiment is used with those types of hinges which utilize a circular mounting recess a in the door 12.
  • the adaptor piece 19 includes a retaining plate 20 pivotally mounted on the outer edge surface thereof. lnternal'chann'el- 19a is sized to fit the fitting piece 14 of the boring device I.
  • the outer edges of the plate 20 are rounded in a circular configuration 22, the radius of which matches the radius of the circular recess 15a. If desired the plate 20 may be increased in area so as to form a complete cylindrical member.
  • the thickness of the plate 20 is designed to insure proper alignment of the boring device 1 with respect to the recess 15a in the door 12.
  • the adaptor piece 19 includes the top piece 23 through which bore 18a is provided. A screw or the like can be used to secure the adaptor piece 19 to the front side of the fixture element 14 as shown in FIG. 10.
  • a mounting recess is provided in a first member and mounting holes are to be located in a second 4 member
  • said device comprising a. adjustable clamp means adapted to be attached to the second member, b. an adapter device removably mounted on said clamp means and having an external surface of predetermined size and shape to be received and precisely fit within said mounting recess in said first member, and i c. drill guide means arranged on said clamp means for locating said mounting holes in said second member,
  • a boring device for locating hinge mounting holes said device being adapted for positioning in a mounting recess provided in a first member while mounting holes are located in a second member, said device comprismg a. adjustable clamp meansto be attachedto the second member,
  • each of said adaptor devices having a different external surface of predetermined size and shape and arranged to be received and precisely fit a mounting recess in said first member
  • said first member may be properly positioned with a respect to said second member and then said clamp means secured to said second member to locate said mounting holes therein.
