ADOLPH MYERS, OF BIRMINGHAM, COUNTY OF WARWICK, ENGLAND.
HOLDER FORPENCILS.
SPECIFICATION orminzpart of Letters Patent N o. 378,897, dated March 6.1 888.
Application filed September 14, 1857. Serial No. 249,642.
To al? whom it may concern: Be 1t known that 1 ADoLPH MYERS, asubject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Birmingham, Warwick county, England, have p ters Patent No. 6,492, dated May 3, 1887.
My invention has reference to improvements 1n pencil cases and other like cases orholderssuch as pen-cases or cases for `knife-blades, tooth-picks, and other similar articles-in whlch the movement or part which holds the lead, knifeblade, tooth-pick, or other like article is caused to protrude-from or to be retracted into the case or holder by pressing a cap at the upper end; and the chief object of my invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive case-or holder of this character in which the same movement of the pressure-cap will, by changing the position of the holder, operate to both protrude and retract the lead, knife-blade, tooth-pick, or other article.
The accompanying drawings illustrate, as an example, a pencil-case constructed according to my invention. t
In said drawings, Figures 1, 2, and 3 representsectional views of the pencil-case and illus -'trate how the pencil-movement is caused to be protruded from the holder; and Figs. 4 and 5 are similar views showing how the pencilmovement can be retracted into the holder. The remaining iigures represent details of the holder, Fig. '6 being a sectional elevation, Fig. 7a plan view, partly in section, and Fig. 8 a cross-section, of the outer casing and inner tube; Fig. 9 a sectional elevation, Fig.`10 a vplan view, and Fig. 11 a cross-section, of the pressure-cap; and Figs. 12, 13, and 14, respectively, a side elevation, partly ih section, a plan view, and an end view, of the pencilmovement. The'pencil-movement A, which is of an ordinary form and carries'the lead a, is arranged to slide to and fro in atube, B,which I call the inner tube, and to project'from the lower end, b', thereof when in use. Around the inner tube, B,is an ordinary outer casing,-C,
(No model.) Patented in England May 3, 1887, No. 6,492.
both being connected together at their lower A va weighted latch, G, which, when the movement A has been caused to protrude from the inner tube, B, 'to its fullest extent, (see Fig. 2,) and the holder is held in a particular position, as hereinafter described, drops into engagement with a catch, b3, on thetube B, so as to hold the movement in its protruded position. The catch b3 is,in the case shown, formed by a slot in the tube B, into which the latch G drops, so as to hold the movement A inits pro. truded position against the pressure of the spring D. -Projecting'from the upper end of t-heouter casing, C, is a tubular pressure-cap,
H, which tits in the annular spaceA between the outer casing, C, and the inner tube, B. This cap H is forced outwardly by a coiled spring, I, which is interposed between the cap and tube B, a pin, J, being provided-on the cap, which projects inwardly into the slot b2,and by engaging with the end of the slot forms a stop forl preventing the'cap H from being forced out too far. The pressure-cap E is herein shown as made in twoparts, its inner end being smaller than its outer end; butthis is not material, as the cap maybe of the same diameter throughout its length.
The operation of the holder` is as follows: To canse the movement A to protrude and to remain protruded, the pencil-holder is held in a horizontal position, or nearly so, (see Fig.
1,) with the slot b3 at the lower side of the holder. The pressure-cap His then pushed inward, (see Fig. 2,) which, as its inner end is in contact with the said projecting pin F on the movement A, causes the movement to protrude from the lower end, b', of the holder, and when the movement A has been fully protruded (see Fig.2) the free end of the weighted latch G falls into the slot b in the inner tube,
ICO
latch G, ready for use.
B. A The pressure being removed from the cap H, it will, by-its spring I, be caused to-regain its normal protruded posit-ion, (see Fig. 3,) leaving the movement protrnded from the other end of the holder, and rmly held by the ment A,the=holder issoheld that the slot -b3 will be at the upper side, yand thepressure-cap H is pushed in ,wardlyto its fullest extent, (see Fig. 4,) when it engages Wit-h the pin F, and,
Acausing the movement to protrude alittle farfrees the weighted'latch G. 'y
ther from the case, Asl soon as his takes place, the weighted latch G Willfall away from the slot'b3 by grav-A ity and the spring D will he "-free to act, and on pressure being removed from the cap H A will retract the movement A; v(See Fig. 5.)
holders-such An index mark or marks may be place uponthe casing C or the cap. H to indicate the position of the slot b3.
5 Myinventioncan be lapplied to other like 'as A pen-holders orholdersfor knife-blades, tooth-picks, and other similar articles-in the same manner as with reference to a pencil-holder, thepen,
- knifeblade, tooth-pick, or other similar article being substitutedfor the lead-holder in the movement A, which latterr is formed to hold the article required.Y Y f l Instead of providing thetnheB with the To retract the lnove-` lsecure by Letters Patent, is-
