SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 378,783, dated February 28, 1888.
Application filed July 3, 1884. Serial No. lffl. (No model.)
To all wbom/ it may concern:
Be it known that l, LEVI l?. Fonnnil, a citizen ol' the United States, residing at Vesteld, in the county of Hamilton, State of Indiana, and by profession a penman, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Slate-Pen` cil Holder, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.
My invention relates to certain new and use ful improvement-s in pencil nholders; and it consists in the construction and combination of the parts, whereby a cheap and effective means is provided for holding the pencil or lead within its holder, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claim. y
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure l is a side view showing the parts vof my improved pencilholder detached. Fig. 2 is a sectional View. Fig. 3 is a plan View of the compressing ring. Fig. 4. is an end view, and Fig. 5 is a sectional View through the line fr x of Fig. l.
A represents a pencil stock or holder-,which is provided with an opening, C, for the reception ofthe pencil or crayon. This holder, near its lower end, is provided with a shoulder, A', and a reduced neck, which is located under the shoulder A and above the shoulder a. The neck B, when the jaws are sprung apart, as shown in Figs. l and 5, is oval on its exterior in cross-section, and is adapted to receive the ring B, the interior opening of which is also oval.
The points ce cof the pencil-holder are of the shape shown in Fig. 1, and taper circumferentially toward each other. A slot, a', which is wider at its lower end than at its upper end, extends from the base of the holder up into its body portion, said slot being of sufficient width to allow the jaws to be compressed upon each other, so as to allow the ring B to be passed over the same and placed upon the neck B. The ringB is provided with an irregular opening or perforation, as shown in Fig. 3, and has its outer edge milled, so that the same may be easily turned upon the neck, and when the said ring is turned it will cause its interior face to bear upon the jaws at points where the ring-opening is narrowest or of short-est diameter, thercby'forcing said jaws together to cause them to clamp and hold the pencil or crayon.
It will be readily seen from the foregoing that the enlarged portion a a will spring sufciently apart to prevent the ring being displaced,an upward movement oi'said ring being prevented by the shoulder A.
I am aware that prior to my invention pencil-holders have been constructed with slotted jaws and a means for clamping said jaws upon the crayon, and I do not c laim such construction, broadly; but
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a crayon-holder, the combination of the stock or handle, consisting of a hollow body slitted at its lower end to form spring-jaws and elliptical in crosssection, and an independent ring shaped interiorly to conform to the eXterior contour of the jaws, whereby thejaws may be pressed together by a circular movement of the ring, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I hereto set my hand this 14th day of May, 1884.
LEVI I. FODREA.
'Witnessesz C. A. NnALn, E. H. Farias.
