JAMES S. MOGLUNG, OF PUEBLO, COLORADO.
creases FOR BLACKBOA'RD ERASERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 378,608, dated February 28, 1888.
Application filed August 10,1887. Serial No. 246,582. (No model.)
- To all whom it may concern.-
- blackboard-eraser.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
The object of my invention is to provide an efficient device for removing chalk from blackboard-erasers without scattering the dust.
My invention consists in an eraser-handle composed of a rod threaded at one end, suitable for inserting into the back of any ordinary eraser, and furnished with a wooden handle, in combination with a box having a slotted side, a cover, and provided with a false bottom of wire-cloth, and having a slot in one of its sides furnished with elastic lips for admitting the eraser-handle, all as hereinafter more fully described.
In one side of the eraser-block B is inserted one end of the rod D, the opposite end of which is received in the handle E.
In the eraser-cleaner shown in Fig. 1 the box F, which is of sufficient length and Width to easily receive the eraser A, is provided with a cover,-G, made in two parts, a b. The part a is fixed to the top of the box and is a little less than half the length of the box. The part I) is connected with the part a by a hinge, 0, and the portion of the part b which comes in contact with the upper edge of the box is provided with a lining, d, of felt or other elastic material. A rubber band, a, is secured to the under surface of the part a,and also to the under surface of the part 12, forming aspring for closing the cover and holding it closed. In
the bottom of the box are placed a number of diagonal ribs, 11, furnished with apertures at each end underneath, to permit a free passage of the chalk-dust, over which is stretched a strip, I, of Wire-cloth.
In one side of the box F, at the middle of its length, is formed aslot, J, and to the edges of the box, on opposite sides of the slot, are attached strips f, of felt or analogous material, and to the inner surface of the box, on opposite sides of the slot J, are secured rubber strips g, whose edges touch each other opposite the middle of the said slot J. Upon the inner walls of the box F, upon opposite sides, are secured strips h, of felt or other suitable material, for preventing the contact of the block 13 with the walls of the box, thereby avoiding the noise which would be produced by rapping the eraser against the box.
The eraser is applied to the blackboard by grasping the handle E in the hand, and when it requires cleaning the eraser is inserted in the box with the block upward; and after the hinged part of the cover is closed the eraser is rapped upon the wire-cloth I, thereby jarring out the chalk contained in the eraser.
The chalk-dust is prevented from escaping from the box by the packing of the cover, and by the strips 9 of the slot, which close around the rod D and form a practically tight joint, thereby permitting of the free movement of the rod in the operation of jarring the eraser.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination with a blackboarderaser comprising a block or back, of the rod D, applied to the side of said block or back, and handle E, applied to said rod, substantially as described.
2. A blackboard-eraser cleaner formed of the box F, provided with a hinged cover and a false bottom formed of Wire-cloth, and having in one side thereof a slot for the introduction of the handle of the eraser, substantially as described. I
3. The combination, with an eraser, A, provided with the rod D and handle E, of the box F, having the slot J, lined with fibrous material and provided with rubber strips a false bottom formed of the ribs H and the wire-cloth I, and the hinged cover-section 5, provided with the rubber spring 6, substantially as described.
4. The combination, with an eraser, A, provided with the rod D and handle E, of the box F, having the slot J, lined with fibrous material and provided with rubber strips a false bottom formed of the ribs H and the wire'cloth I, the hinged cover-section Z), provided with the rubber spring 6, the packing d, andthe fibrous strips h, substantially as de scribed.
