COMBINATION-LOCK AND ALARM.

Beit known that L'ROBERT BAUMANN, of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved CombinatiomLock and Alarm, of which the following is a full, clear, andY exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved combination -lock connected with an alarm and adapted for doors, money-drawers, dto.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improve,- inent with the inner plate and other parts removed, parts being in section. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line .fr m
of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the sameon the line y y of Fig. 1. Fig.' 4 is a vertical crosssection of part of my improvement on the line z z of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a sectional plan view of the alarm-connection, and Fig. 6 is a face view of the transmitting-gear.
My improved combination-lock and alarm is provided with the inner casing, A, and the outer casing, B, secured, respectively, to the inside and outside of the door C, or other part on which my improvement is to be used. In the casings A and B and in the door C is held the horizontal shaft D, provided ou its outer end with a knob, E, extending a short distance beyond the recess B', formed in the front of the casing B, as illustrated in Fig. 2. On the square part of the shaft D is held loosely a collar, F, on which 'is held, to rotate loosely, a wheel, G, provided with a ange, on which are marked numerals, preferably from 1 to 100, one of said numerals appearing at a time through an aperture, B2, formed on top in the rim ofthe casing B, as illustrated in Fig. 3.
On the wheel G is secured a gear-wheel, H, which also rotates slowly with the said wheel on the collar F, and which carries a pawl, H', engaging a gear-wheel, I, secured by a key to the shaft D in such a manner that the said shaft D can be moved laterally, at the same time turning the said gear-wheel I with it. The pawl H is pressed in contact with the teeth of thegear-wheelIbymeansofaspringHz,secured 5 5 t0 the gear-whee1 H, as shown in Fig. 6. The gear-wheel H meshes into a pinion, J', secured to a shaft,.J, mounted in suitable bearings in the casing A and passing through the door C, as shown in Fig. 2. The inner end of said shaft J is provided with a knob, J2, which When turned imparts a rotary motion to the said wheel H, thus operating the numerah wheel Gr and the shaft D.
On the rear part of the shaft D is coiled a spring, D',which presses with one end against the inner plate of the casing A and with its other end against the gear-wheel K, secured to said shaft D. The spring D' holds the said shaft D in its innermost position and at the same time permits an outward motion of said shaft when it is desirable to open the door, as hereinafter more fully described.
The teeth of the gear-wheel K can be engaged by a liXed pawl or pin, K', secured to the inner plate of the casing A, said pin K' being disengaged in the ordinary positionV of the lock, as illustrated in Fig. 2 but when the shaft D is moved outward then the gearwheel K, moving in the same direction, is engaged by one of its teeth with the said pin K', so as to prevent the wheel from revolving.
Near the inner end of the shaft D in the casing A is secured a radial arm, L, provided on its outer end with a notch, L', adapted to be placed in contact with a lug, N', secured to the upright lever N, fulcrumed at N2 in the casing A. The lower end of the lever N is pivotally connected with a horizontal locking-lever, O, fulcrumed at O', and provided at its end with a segmental arm, O2, adapted to engage or disengage the lower end of the locking-bolt P, held to slide in suitable bearings in the casing A and engaging with its outer V-shaped end, P', the similarlyshaped keeper, Q, secured in 9 5 any suitable manner to the door-jamb C'. The bolt Pis held in an outermost position by a spring, P2, which, however, permits the bolt to be moved inward when pressed against the keeper Q and when the segmental arm O2 of roo the lever O is removed from its end.
The upper end of the vertical lever Nis piv otally connected with one arm of the bell` crank lever R, carrying on its other arm a pin, R', adapted to engage a similar pin, S', projecting from the arm S, held to slide vertically in suitable bearings in the casing A. Said arm S is provided with a lug, S2, against which operates apin, S3, secured to one arm of the bellcrank lever Si pivotally connected by its other arm with the locking-bolt T, held to slide in suitable bearings in the casing A, and passing through one side of the same and operating in connection with the keeper T', secured to the jamb G' of the door C.
The locking-bolt T is held in a closed position by a spring, S5, drawing on one arm of the bell-crank lever S4, which is thus held with its pin Ss against the lug S2 of the arm S. The latter is provided with a second projection, S6, against which presses the free end of a iiat spring, ST, secured to the inner plate of the casing A. The spring S7 is not quite as strong as the spring S5, and hence the arm S is, under ordinary circumstances, held in the position shown in Fig. l.
The extreme lower end of the arm S is pivotally connected with one arm of a bell-crank lever, U, fulcrumed on the plate U', secured to the casing A, and projecting through one side of the same, being adapted to engage with its outer end the spring-plate U2, secured to the jamb C', and connected with a wire, U3, leading to one pole of a battery. The other arm of the bellcrank lever U is adapted to connectwith a xed plate, V', secured to the casing A, and of similar construction to the plate U'. The outer end of said plate V is also adapted to connect with the spring-plate V2, secured to the jamb C', and connected with the wire V3 leading to the other pole of the battery.
It will be seen that when the door is closed the plates U and V are engaged with the spring plates U2 and V2, respectively, and when the bell-crank lever U is shifted so that one of its arms engages the plate V', then an electric circuit is established, and an alarm set in the circuit is sounded. The keepers Q and T and the spring-plates V2 and Uiare preferably inclosed in a casing, Q', secured to the jamb O. On one of the fulcrums N2 of the lever N is also secured an arm, N4, resting with its outer end against the upper end of the lever N and one side of the bell-crank lever Si and against the said arm N11 presses a flat spring, N5, whereby said lever N is held in its normal position, as shown in Fig. 1, until disturbed by the operator. Near the lower end of the lever N is formed an incline, N2, adapted to be engaged by an arm, XV, secured to the knob XV', adapted to slide vertically in the rear plate of the casing A. A spring, V2, is connected by one end with said knob XV', and by its .other end is se cured to the inside of the casing A, as illustrated in Fig. it, so that the said knob W is always held in an uppermost position, so that its arm lV is disengaged from the incline N3,
which latter isonly engaged when the knob W is pressed downward by the operator Aon the inside of the door.
The operation is as follows: The lock, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, is in a closed position as the segmental arm O2`of the lever O engages the inner end of thelocking-boltP, which is held behind the V-shaped keeper Q, and hence cannot be moved inward on account of said segmental arm O2. The radial arm L is set in line with a certain number on the nunieral-wheel G, so that when said number appears in the opening B2 of the outer casing, B, then the outer notched end, L', of said radial arm L is in line with the lug N' of the lever N, and when the operator now pulls on the knob Eof the shaftDthelatter, on moving outward, moves the radial arm L in the same direction, so that its end, pressing against the lug N', causes the lever N to swing inward in the direction of the arrow a', (see Fig. 2,) whereby thelever O, with its segmental arm O2, is swung outward in the direction of the arrow b', so that the lower end of the locking-bolt P becomes free. The swinging motion of the lever N imparts a swinging motion to the bell-crank lever R, so that the bolt T is free to move inward. As soon as the operator presses against the door from the outside, then the two bolts P and T are nioved inward on account of their V-shaped ends engaging the inclines of their respective keepers Q and T. The arm N* passes with its free end onto the top edge of the free end of the bell-crank lever Sand locks the latter in position.
It will be seen that the arm S becomes free to move downward when the boltT moves inward, as above described, the pin S3 being dis engaged by this movement from the lug S2. The spring STpresses said arm S downward, so that the bell-crank lever U connects by means of its arm the two plates V and U', thereby establishing a circuit whereby the alarm is sounded. As soon as the door is opened, the spring S5, pulling on the bell crank lever S4, causes an outward movement of the bolt T again, and at the same time an upward movement of the arm S, so that the bellnrank lever U is again disconnected from the plate V', after which the alarm ceases to sound. It will further be seen that the shaft D is prevented from turning when moved inward, as above described, as the pin K engages between the teeth of `the gear-wheel K as the latter moves withthe said shaft and at the same time compresses the spring D', which, as soon as the .operator releases. his pressure on the knob E,
again forces the shaft D and its connections to their normal position, as illustrated in Fig. 2.
Vhen the operator desires to open the door from the inside, he pulls the knob W downward, so that the arm iV, pressing against the incline N3, causes a swinging motion of the lever N in the direction of the arrow a', and the above-deseribed operation of unlocking the bolts P and T is repeated.

It will be seen that when a person desires to open the door without knowing the combination he can neither by sound nor sight find the relative positions of the arm L and the lug N', and is hence unable to open the door. It will further be seen that when the operator turns the shaft D by means of the knob E the numeral-wheel G is rotated and the several figures appear through the opening B2. The operator can also pull the knob E outward; but as long as the radial arm L is not opposite the lug N the door cannot be opened.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. ln a combination-lock and alarm, the combination, with a shaft adapted to turn and to slide, of a number-wheel held on the said shaft, a radial arm secured on the said shaft, and a lever connected with the locking bolt or bolts and having a lug adapted to be engaged by the outer end of said radial arm, substantially as shown and described.

Inl a combination -lock and alarm, the combination, with an outer casing having an aperture in its rim, of a number-wheel held in said casing and provided on its rim with numerals, one of which appears at a time through Said aperture in the casing, a shaft having a turning and sliding` motioh and carrying the said number-wheel, a radial arm secured to said shaft, a lever having a lug adapted to be engaged by the outer end of said radial arm, and a second lever pivotall y connected with said first-named lever and provided with a segmental arm adapted to engage the inner end of the locking-bolt, substantially'as shown and described.
3. In a combination-lock and alarm, the combination, with an outer casing having an aperture in its rim, of a number-wheel provided on its rim with numerals, one of which appears at a time through said aperture, a shaft adapted to be turned and slid and carrying said number-wheel, a gear-wheel secured on the rear end of said shaft, and a iixed pin adapted to engage the teeth of said gear-wheel when said shaft is moved forward, thus locking the shaft in position,substantially as shown and described.
4. In a combination-lock and alarm, the combination, with a locking-bolt and keeper, of a segmental arm adapted to engage the inner end ofsaid locking-bolt, a horizontal lever carrying said segmental arm, a vertical lever pivotally connected with said horizontal lever, and a radial arm adapted to engage a lug on said vertical lever, said radial arm being secured to a shaft having a turning and sliding motion, substantially as shown and described.V
5. In a combination-lock and alarm, the

In a combination-lock and alarm, the combination, with a shaft adapted to turn and slide in its bearings, and a radial arm secured to said shaft, of a vertical lever provided with a lug and adapted to be engaged by the said radial arm, a spring-arm operated on by the upper end of said vertical lever, a bell-crank lever held in a locked position by the outer end of said spring-arm, and a locking-plate pivotally connected with the said bell-crank lever, substantially as shown and described.
7. In a combination-lock and alarm, the combination, with a shaft adapted to turn and slide in its bearings, and a radial arm secured to said shaft, of a verticallever provided with a lug and adapted to be engaged by the said radial arm, a spring-arm operated ou by the upper end of said vertical lever,a bell-crank lever held in a locked position by the outer end of said spring-arma locking-plate pivotally connected with the said bell-crank lever, a vertical arm connected with said bell-crank lever and operated on by a spring, a second bellcrank lever connected with the said arm and pivoted to a plate, a second plate adapted to be connected with said secondrbellcrank lever, and spring plates adapted to be connected with the said plates and also connected with a battery and an alarm, substantially as shown and described.
8. In a combination-lock and alarm, the combination, with a shaft adapted to be turned ICO IOS
and slid in its bearings, and a radial arm secured to said shaft, of a lever having a lug adapted to be engaged by the free end of said radial arm, a bell-crank lever pivotally connected by one of its arms with said vertical lever, a vertical arm carrying apin adapted to be engaged by a. similar pin on the said bellcrank-lever, a spring operating on said vertical arm, and a bell-crank lever pivotally connected with said vertical arm and adapted to establish or break an electric circuit, substantially as shown and described.
