SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 594,208, dated November 23, 1897. Application filed June 18, 1897. Serial No. 641,296- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, \VARREN L. LOVE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Beaver Falls, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in combination-locks, and has for its object to provide a lock of this nature which will be applicable for use on doors and the like where it is desired to have a more secure lock than is afforded by the ordinary lock adapted for a key.
The invention has for its further object to construct a lock of this nature which can be operated with one or several sets of tumblers, easily manipulated in order to open the look by those acquainted with the combination, but which will absolutely prevent the lock being opened by any one who may not be versant with the exact numbers by which the combination is to be worked.
The invention has for its further object a lock of this nature which will be extremely simple in its construction, having no delicate mechanism to become disarranged or get out of order, and being therefore strong, durable, and effectual in the performance of all its functions, and that will be comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the above and other objects in view the invention finally consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more specifically described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like figures of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional view of a lock-casing and a portion of a door, showing my improved lock secured in position. Fig. 2 is a plan View of one of the number-rings employed for operating the combination. Fig. 3 is a plan View of the shell holding the tumblers. Fig. 4: is a plan view of the tumblers. Fig. 5 is a plan View of the key for locking the shell and the operating-bolt. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the washer employed for adjusting the lock to any thickness of door. Fig. 7 is a plan View of the operating-bolt. Fig. 8 is a similar view of the plate secured in the door. Fig. 9 is a transverse vertical sectional view of the tumbler-shell and operating-bolt. Referring now to the drawings by reference-figures, 1 indicates the operating-bolt, which'is provided on its outer end with an operating-knob 2 and on its shank with segment-grooves 3, which are adapted to receive the disks 4, which serve as the tumblers in operating the lock. The inner end of the operating-bolt 1 is square or of other suitable shape, so that the same will firmly engage a disk 6 within the lock-bolt casing 7, which is secured to the inner face of the door 8, said disk 6 being secured to the cross-piece 9, which engages upwardly-extending lugs 10, formed on the frames 11 of the yoke 12, to which the lock-bar 13 is attached, said lockbar operating through a cross-piece 14, secured in the casing 7, and being also provided with an engaging beveled head 16, a coilspring 15 being arranged on the lock-bar 13, between the cross-piece 14 and the head 16, for projecting the same, the aperture provided in the door for the reception of the operating-bolt, which is recessed at the inner face of the door in a manner to receive a washer 17, which engages over the square end of the operating-bolt 1 and is fastened by means of a pin 18 through the said bolt, a number of holes 19 being provided in said bolt, so that the same may be firmly secured in different thicknesses of doors.
In order to disengage the latch-head 16 from the inside of the building without necessitating the operation of the combination, I have provided a knob 20, (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 12,) having a pin which engages in the aperture 21 in the yoke 12, thus operating this yoke and withdrawing the latch-head 16 without moving the cross-bar 9, the disk 6, or the operating-bolt 1, said yoke being forced backwardly, as is shown in dotted lines in Figs. 11 and 12.
\Vhen the combination has been set soas to permit the operating-bolt 1 to turn, as will be hereinafter described, it will be observed that it will cause the disk 6 to turn, thus moving the cross-head 9 in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 11, causing the same to pull on the lug 10 of one of the arms 11 and withdraw the latch-head from its engagement. On the portion of the operating-bolt 1 which is provided with segment-grooves 3 I provide a shell 22, having a flange 23, which abuts against the flange 24:,f0rmed on the operatingbolt at the end of the shank, said shell 22 be ing provided with slots 25, forming pockets for the reception of the tumblers 4. Upon this shell are arranged the operating-rings 26, which are provided with numbers or letters arranged in any desired manner, said rings being provided with an annular flange 27 for operating the same, so that one ring can be moved without destroying the position of the other or engaging ring, said rings being also provided 011 their inner face with segmentgrooves 28, which are adapted to receive the tumblers 4. The full throw of the operatingbolt 1 is regulated by means of an irregular end'29, formed on the inner end of the shell 22, and a pin or key 30, engaging through the operating bolt, this irregular end being formed so as to give any required throw that may be necessary to remove the latch-head 16 from its engagement. The operating-rin gs 26 are held in position on the shell by means of a flange 23 and by a flange 31, formed on the outer face of the plate 32 and suitably secured to the door 8, said plate also carrying on its inner face a flange 33,which is fastened, by means of a screw or pin 34: to the shell 22.
I prefer to recess the door sufficiently, so that the plate 35, being apertured in a style to conform to the flange 33, will firmly engage the same and thus hold the lock in a rigid position.
It will be observed that when the disks 4, which lie at all timeswithin the pockets 25, are also in engagement with the segment-grooves 3 the operating edge of the disks or disk will at this time lie flush with or below the outer face of the shell 22, so that the operating-ring 26 may be readily turned upon the shell and brought to its desired position, where it is allowed to remain while the shell is being turned, so as to bring the disk controlling the next ring into position for the operation of this ring to a point forming the second number of the combination. This operation is carried .on throughout until the desired numbers have been brought into a line with each other, which will release the lock formed by the disks and permit the turning of the operating-bolt 1, so as to release the latch-head from its engagement.
It will be noted, of course, that this combination may be worked with one, two, or as many of the operating-rings as may be de- -sired, and that various changes may be made throughout the details of constructionwithout departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Ina combination-lock, an operating-bolt having connections with a latch-bolt, said operating-bolt having a shell thereon provided with pockets, the shank of said bolt being provided with grooves which together with the pockets in the shell form receptacles for the tumblers and operating-rings forming the combination arranged on said shell, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a combination-lock, abolt having a series of grooves part way on its shank, a shell mounted on the bolt over said groo ves,pockets formed in said shell, said pockets and grooves in the bolt forming receptacles for the tumblers operating-rings on said shell, said rings provided with grooves to engage the tumblers when the same are unseated from their position on the grooves, and a latch-bar arranged within a casing and having connections with the operating-bolt,whereby the same is turned when the rings have been set at a certain position, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a combination-lock,an operating-bolt, a shell mounted on said bolt, said shell being provided with pockets and the bolt having a groove part way on its exterior face,numbered operating-rings mounted on said shell, tumblers in said pockets, the operating-rings being provided with recesses or grooves to engage the tumblers when they are unseated from their pockets, a latch-bar, a yoke connected to said latch-bar, means whereby the yoke is operated to withdraw the latch when the operating-bolt is turned and means for holding the operating-rings and lock in the desired position, substantially as shown and described.
